Yoo Yeon-seok (Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim) has been confirmed to join the cast of Goblin writer Kim Eun-sook’s upcoming human drama, Mr. Sunshine. His agency, King Kong Entertainment, revealed today that he will be starring in the drama as Go Dong-mae opposite Lee Byung-hun and Kim Tae-ri.
Mr. Sunshine is a human melodrama set in the beginning of the 21st century, just a few years before Japan annexed Korea in 1910. It tells the story of soldiers who must be remembered but were not recorded in history. One such soldier is Lee Byung-hun’s character, who as a child was taken to the Unites States during the Shinmiyangyo incident in 1971 when a U.S. military expedition to Korea turned into armed conflict. He spent his life living in a foreign land since then and comes back to his motherland several years later as an American soldier.
The agency did not provide more details on Yoo Yeon-seok’s character but said that Go Dong-mae will fall in love with a young aristocratic lady played by Kim Tae-ri. This woman is also the love interest of Lee Byung-hun’s character. As of now, it is not known whether Go Dong-mae is also a soldier or just a civilian.
Mr. Sunshine is Yoo Yeon-seok’s first drama project in 2017. He played a leading role in his hit 2016 medical drama, Romantic Doctor Teacher Kim. Yoon Ha-rim, the CEO of the drama’s production company Hwa & Dam Pictures, is confident that the actor will deliver a good performance in his new drama saying, “I have always watched his acting with interest as he absorbs and adapts with his own color rather than limiting himself to the genre or character, and now we will be working with him for ‘Mr. Sunshine.’ I have high anticipation for his acting that will make another transformation through this project.”
Kim Eun-sook is collaborating again with PD Lee Eung-bok in producing Mr. Sunshine. Their works in 2016, Descendants of the Sun and Goblin, became a hit and attracted millions of fans worldwide. Their new drama is set to be broadcast in the first half of 2018.
