Weekly Ratings Update: March 6-12, 2017

Welcome to the first post of the Weekly Ratings Update! As the name suggests, this is a weekly post whose purpose is to provide you with the ratings data of all ongoing weekday prime time dramas from free-to-air networks and all prime time dramas from cable networks. The format of the post includes an introduction, where the rating performance of the dramas are briefly examined; a weekly ranking, where the dramas are ranked according to their average ratings; and statistics, where the ratings chart of each drama is shown. To accommodate the drama(s) airing every Saturdays and/or Sundays, this weekly post will be published every Monday. All ratings are based from Nielsen Korea, unless otherwise stated.

The week saw Defendant breaking its own record again with an all-time high ratings of 24.9 %, a result of a 1.2 percentage points (pp) increase from its odd episode rating. Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People dropped from its February 28 episode rating of 12.5 % to 10.3 % in last week’s odd episode, but gained a 0.2 percentage point-increase to finish the week with 10.5 %. That’s not bad at all, especially if we compare its performance to Perfect Wife which posted 5.1 % in the beginning but lost 0.2 percentage points in the following episode. Over at cable network, Introverted Boss registered a slight increase in ratings from 1.58 to 1.63 %, although that is still considered low by the network’s standards.

For the Wednesday-Thursday time slot, Chief Kim remains undefeated despite having a drop in its ratings. For the week of Feb 27 – Mar 5, its ratings stayed at 18.4 % but for last week the figure dropped to 16.8 %. It managed to gain 0.3 pp and ended the week with a still impressive 17.1 %. Saimdang, Light’s Diary, meanwhile, maintains its position at the 10 – 11 % range and gained a 0.2 pp increase. Missing Nine also saw an increase in its even episode rating by 0.2 pp, but this is not enough to give itself a decent series ending. Is this another bad year for MBC?

Tomorrow With You posted a less than 1 % rating for its odd episode, its lowest rating since its premiere. Fortunately, it managed to gain 0.21 pp to recover. Strong Woman Do Bong Soon, in contrast, achieved its highest rating to date and registered a 1.58 pp increase in its even episode, the biggest change in percentage points among all the dramas listed here. We will see this week if it can break through 9 % or even higher. Over at OCN,  Voice ended its successful run with a final episode and average rating of 5.055 and 4.357 %, respectively.

Weekly Ranking

Defendant is doing very well and remains the highest-rated drama airing in free-to-air network. It’s good to see Chief Kim, Saimdang, and Rebel with their above 10 % average ratings. They might be able to rank among the top 10 dramas in 2017 if they maintain or improve their records.

Strong Woman is maintaining an exceptional record among the cable dramas and can potentially improve in the coming weeks to break Childless Comfort‘s record of 10.72 %, the highest in the history of JTBC. OCN has also its share of crucial development in its record with Voice becoming its highest-rated drama to date. Meanwhile, tvN seems to be losing its image last year as the cable drama powerhouse, with Introverted Boss and Tomorrow With You having an average ratings of less than 2 %.

This ranking is based on the average ratings of the episodes of the drama that have aired so far.

Me? Just an ordinary lad with an extraordinary (says this something called 'stereotype') habit of watching Korean dramas. It started with action-filled City Hunter and the rest, as they say, is history.
