Set to air this year, SBS’s new series Penthouse has announced some of today’s most admired actors as members of its main cast: Lee Ji-ah, Kim So-yeon, Eugene, Uhm Ki-joon, Yoon Jong-hoon, Shin Eun-kyung, Bong Tae-gyu, Park Eun-seok, and Yoon Joo-hee.
Penthouse will follow the story of three ambitious women whose common hunger for success changes them in terrifying ways. The first one, who was born wealthy, lives like a queen in a luxury penthouse but has been struggling to hide a secret. The second is a greedy prima donna who will do anything for money. The last one grew up underprivileged but has decided to enter the world of the affluent to provide a better life for her child.
Lee Ji-ah has been cast as Sim Soo-ryeon, a woman known as the “Penthouse Queen” who is hiding a deep secret. Born into a wealthy family, she is naturally elegant and classy. In 2018, Lee graced the small screen with laudable portrayals in tvN’s My Mister and KBS2’s The Ghost Detective.
Meanwhile, Kim So-yeon will breathe life into the character Cheon Seo-jin, a rich and arrogant woman who harbors an insatiable desire for wealth and power. Over the past two years, Kim has wowed viewers with her performances in SBS’s Secret Mother (2018) and KBS2’s Mother of Mine (2019).
Acting alongside Lee and Kim is Eugene, who is best known for her roles in JTBC’s Can We Fall in Love, Again? (2014) and KBS2’s All About My Mom (2015–2016). She will make a comeback after four years as Oh Yoon-hee, a woman who came from humble beginnings and had to spend her life without freedom. Now a mother, she is determined to rise through the ranks of societal class and ensure that her child gets a better chance at success.
In addition, actors Uhm Ki-joon (Heart Surgeons) and Yoon Jong-hoon (Find Me in Your Memory) will be suiting up as Joo Dan-tae and Ha Yoon-cheol, respectively. Dan-tae is the husband of Sim Soo-ryeon. He is a real-estate genius who has inherent talent in business and investments. On the other hand, Yoon-cheol is Cheon Seo-jin’s husband, a chief surgeon who is just as ambitious as his wife.
Also joining the major cast are Shin Eun-kyung (The Last Empress) as Kang Ma-ri, a seemingly well-off woman who is actually leading a double life; Bong Tae-gyu (Doctor Detective) as Lee Kyu-jin, an attorney and only son of a wealthy family of lawyers but one who has never outgrown being a momma’s boy; Park Eun-seok (Leverage) as Gu Ho-dong, a talented and quick-witted physical education teacher; and lastly, Yoon Joo-hee (I Wanna Hear Your Song) as Go Sang-ah, a former announcer who now lives as Lee Kyu-jin’s wife.
The production crew behind the series shared, “After its confirmation placed it among the highly anticipated works in the second half of 2020, Penthouse is expected to bring a splendid conclusion to the slate of remarkable television dramas SBS has offered us this year. Please look forward to it.”
Penthouse will be helmed by director Joo Dong-min of Return (2018) and penned by screenwriter Kim Sun-ok of Band of Sisters (2017), who previously teamed up in the series The Last Empress (2018–2019).
