Upcoming film Citizen Deok-hee has unveiled its powerful casting lineup, to be led by stars Ra Mi-ran, Gong Myung, Yeom Hye-ran, and Jang Yoon-ju in the main cast, along with Park Byung-eun, Ahn Eun-jin, and Lee Moo-saeng in the supporting roles.
The new comedy movie will follow an ordinary citizen named Deok-hee, who becomes the victim of a phishing scam and loses a large amount of money. A phishing scam is a type of fraud where the victims are asked for their personal and financial information over a phone call by someone pretending to be an authorized agent. Along with two friends and a member of the phishing group, Deok-hee then sets out to catch the criminal organization. The film is based on a real-life story from 2016 where a voice phishing group was arrested after their leader was relentlessly chased by one of the victims, a middle-aged housewife.
Ra Mi-ran is set to play Deok-hee, the victim of the said phishing scam. Having lost millions of won in the scam, she sets out to pursue the phishing group along with the help of three more people. The actress is best known for her role in the 2015 popular series Reply 1988. A veteran actress, she has appeared in many hit series in the past, such as Cinderella Man (2009), The Heirs (2013), The Beauty Inside (2018), and most recently, Black Dog (2019–2020), where she played a main role.
Meanwhile, Gong Myung has signed up to play Jae-min, a member of the voice phishing group who will serve as Deok-hee’s secret informant, even though he is gambling to lose everything by doing this. Gong Myung is well known for appearing in popular series like Beautiful You (2015–2016), The Bride of Habaek (2017), Revolutionary Love (2017), and Be Melodramatic (2019).
Actress Yeom Hye-ran is also joining in to play Deok-hee’s co-worker and friend Bong-rim, who will help her pursue the phishing gang. Yeom caught the attention of the audience with her role as an empowered lawyer in When the Camellia Blooms last year. This year, she has appeared in Hospital Playlist and Mystic Pop-up Bar and is set to play a main role in the upcoming series A Wonderful Rumor, due to air sometime within the year.
Lastly, Jang Yoon-ju will be portraying the character Sook-ja, who supports Deok-hee in her endeavors. This will mark the actress’ comeback to films following her last movie Veteran five years ago. She has another movie called 3 Sisters lined up for release this year. Last year, Jang appeared in the series Perfume. With only a few projects in her acting career so far, she is expected to widen her acting spectrum with this new role.
Three more actors are also confirmed to play supporting roles in the film.
Park Byung-eun, who has shown quality acting regardless of genre and character, will be playing the role of Detective Park Hyung-sa, an intelligence team detective who is also tracking down the phishing group. Earlier this year, Park was seen in the second season of the historical zombie thriller Kingdom, a Netflix original series that became an international hit. He played Min Chi-rok, the Head of the Royal Commandery who first became suspicious of the Queen. He last starred in the romantic-comedy series Oh My Baby, which premiered in May.
Meanwhile, Lee Moo-saeng was loved by the audience in the record breaking series The World of the Married (2020), where he played the psychiatrist Kim Yoon-ki who is drawn to the main character Ji Sun-woo. In the film, Lee’s character will put Deok-hee’s group in crisis. Aside from the film, the actor has also been cast in the upcoming Netflix original series The Sea of Silence, where he will be joining Hallyu (Korean wave) stars Gong Yoo and Bae Doo-na.
Lastly, Ahn Eun-jin will join the cast as Ae-rim, the younger sister of Bong-rim (Deok-hee’s co-worker). She has also been cast in the upcoming romance series More Than Friends, which is set to air on September 25.
Citizen Deok-hee is the first commercial film of director Park Young-ju, who was officially invited to the Cinéfondation section of the 69th Cannes International Film Festival for her short independent film 1 Kilogram (2015). She has also received acclaim at domestic and international film festivals for her independent feature film Second Life (2018).
