tvN to air Wednesday-Thursday drama anew with “Criminal Minds”

Cable network tvN is set to air a drama every Wednesdays and Thursdays again after five years, with Criminal Minds now scheduled to premiere on July 26, 2017, at 22:50 Korean Standard Time. The network started airing dramas on the said time slot in 2006 but discontinued it in 2007 until 2012.

Criminal Minds is a crime thriller drama about a group of agents who make use of criminal psychology to catch crime suspects. It is the Korean remake of the hit US TV series of the same name that aired its 12th and last season in May 2017. The drama has Lee Joon-gi (Moon Lover’s: Scarlet Heart Ryeo) and Moon Chae-won (Goodbye Mr. Black) playing the lead roles. Lee Joon-gi plays the role of a NATO Communications and Information agent named Hyun Joon, a character he described as more lively and active compared to his roles in previous dramas. Son Hyun-joo, Lee Sun-bin, and Kim Yeong-cheol round out the main cast of the drama.

The 20-episode drama is completely pre-produced and boasts of the assistance of ABC Studios and Disney Media Productions, which produced the American version of the show, in its production. These production companies collaborated with Studio Dragon and Taewon Entertainment to ensure that the essential elements of the original version are maintained in the remake. The production team conducted its first script reading on April 7 and began filming on April 17, 2017.

Criminal Minds marks the return of tvN’s Wednesday-Thursday drama programming after five years. In 2012, the networked aired The 3rd Hospital, I Need Romance 2012, Queen In-hyun’s Man, and Twelve Men in a Year at the 11 PM time slot, which makes it safe from the competition of the free-to-air dramas that air from 10 to 11 PM. Criminal Minds will start 10 minutes earlier at 10:50 PM, a schedule that makes it compete with the dramas from KBS, MBC, and SBS for about 20 minutes. This is due to the recent changes in the airing schedule of the last two networks, which now airs two 35-minute episodes every night with a one-minute advertisement in between.

Criminal Minds will run from July 26 to September 28, 2017.

***Note: The first version of this article mistakenly stated that Taewon Entertainment worked with Next Entertainment World in producing the drama. Taewon Entertainment collaborated with Studio Dragon, a production company under CJ E&M which is also the owner of cable television network tvN.

Me? Just an ordinary lad with an extraordinary (says this something called 'stereotype') habit of watching Korean dramas. It started with action-filled City Hunter and the rest, as they say, is history.

Taewon has collaborated with Studo Dragon instead of Next Entertainment World, after moving from KBS2 to tvN.
