tvN confirms premiere date of ‘True Beauty’

One of the most anticipated webtoon-based series of the year is finally coming to K-dramaland, with tvN confirming the official premiere date of True Beauty.

The new Wednesday and Thursday drama is based on “Goddess Advent,” one of Korea’s most popular webtoons. It tells the story of a shy, acne-stricken, high school student who turns into an internet star overnight, thanks to her makeup skills. To keep her popularity, she continues to hide under the makeup and builds up lies to cover her real identity. It stars Moon Ga-young (Find Me in Your Memory) as the central female character Im Ju-gyeong, along with Cha Eun-woo (Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung) as Lee Su-ho and Hwang In-yeop (18 Again) as Han Seo-jun, the male leads who will compete for her attention and feelings. The story aims to delve into the process of teens growing up in search of their friendship, love, and dreams.

The webtoon has been making a lot of buzz online since it was announced that it will be adapted into a drama. “Goddess Advent” fans are anticipating how the webtoon story will unfold once it gets turned into a series, with the focus of the plot on Ju-gyeong, the main character who has a pretty appearance but doesn’t want to be found as someone who hides under makeup, and Su-ho, who happens to know Ju-gyeong’s real identity before and after she becomes an overnight star. The two gradually get closer with each other, but Seo-jun, another campus celebrity, becomes drawn to Ju-gyeong and pursues her, creating a love triangle between him, Ju-gyeong, and Su-ho.

Recently, a webtoon-version poster drawn by the original author Yaongyi and a poster with the cast of the drama were released side by side to the anticipating viewers. The perfect similarity of the main poster to the webtoon version is creating more excitement among fans who have been supporting the webtoon since it came out. The webtoon has ranked no. 1 since its serial launch in April 2018, and through Naver Webtoon’s global platform, it became a global hit that has advanced to the United States, Japan, Thailand, France, and other countries around the world, further boosting the popularity of Korean webtoons.

True Beauty will air its first episode on tvN this coming December 9 at 10:30 p.m. KST. It is helmed by Extraordinary You (2019) director Kim Sang-hyeop and penned by writer Lee Si-eun of Top Star Yoo Baek (2018–2019). Meanwhile, the webtoon can be enjoyed through the Naver Webtoon homepage, mobile web, and app.

It was Princess Lulu who first introduced her to Korean dramas but it was Yoon Ji-hoo from Boys Over Flowers who enticed her to stay in K-dramaland. She writes news and features for Kdramapal, which combines two of her most favorite things in the world—writing and K-dramas (look who's living the dream). The name Luna literally translates to "moon" and nothing special; she just likes writing at night.
