‘The Spies Who Loved Me’ premiere teaser reveals unexpected reunion of ex-lovers Yoo In-na, Eric Mun

Six days away from its highly anticipated premiere, MBC’s newest romantic-comedy series The Spies Who Loved Me drops a gasp-worthy teaser for its first episode.

The Spies Who Loved Me revolves around the female protagonist Kang Ah-reum (Yoo In-na, Touch Your Heart), a divorcee working as a wedding dress designer. Her ex-husband, Jun Ji-hoon (Eric Mun, Eccentric! Chef Moon), is a secret agent for Interpol who has been disguising himself as a travel writer. Despite the risks, Ji-hoon did not stop taking classified missions after he got married as his job was practically the only thing that has been supporting him financially. Even when he and Ah-reum parted ways, he never got to reveal his true identity to her. Later, Ah-reum finds love again and decides to get married for the second time. Her husband is Derek Hyun (Lim Ju-hwan, The Game: Towards Zero), a diplomatic official. What she does not know, however, is that underneath Derek’s gentle and warm façade lies a cold-blooded corporate spy. He may sincerely love her, but he is also prepared to do anything for his secret profession. When an unexpected turn of events brings Ji-hoon, Ah-reum, and Derek in one circle, the two spies eventually end up putting the innocent woman at the center of a riveting espionage battle.

The freshly released premiere teaser opens to a flashback of Jun Ji-hoon and Kang Ah-reum’s sweet memories together. As Ji-hoon’s train of thought travels back in time to remember how affectionately Ah-reum gazed at him, how tightly they held each other, and how passionately they shared kisses, his voice takes over the background and says, “I’d be okay walking around with no direction for the rest of my life, just for this moment.” His smile did not last long, however, because Ah-reum’s sharp words brought his drifting mind back to the present when she asked, “Is there any reason for us to smile when thinking about the past?” Sitting side by side on a bed, it looks like the ex-couple just had an unexpected get-together.

Then, the next scenes appear to foreshadow Ah-reum and Ji-hoon’s fateful reunion. The latter gets asked to attend someone’s detective-themed bachelorette party and was instructed to dress as a sheriff. The invitation message reads, “Before meeting the VIP at my wedding, you must find the bride first. I will show you who the VIP is and where your special gifts are. In return, please, you must protect me.” Ji-hoon goes to the event dressed as an outdated Western sheriff. In that same gathering, he has a mission to locate a National Intelligence Service (NIS) agent who could help him with his current investigations. Similarly, Ah-reum is at the party as a close friend of Sophie Ahn (Yoon So-hee, Witch’s Love), the bride who seems to be in serious trouble, if not already, and has gone “literally” missing. As it turns out, Sophie is also the NIS agent that Ji-hoon is looking for.

Now, whether they like it or not, Ah-reum and Ji-hoon must quickly team up to save the bride. They cannot afford to waste time, blaming each other for what happened between them in the past. Making matters worse, however, is the coincidence of being back at the island that bore witness to how their love story began.

The Spies Who Loved Me is the first television script work by screenwriter Lee Ji-min, whose previous projects include critically praised films such as The Age of Shadows (2016) and The Man Standing Next (2020). Directed by Lee Jae-jin of The Banker (2019), the upcoming series is slated to premiere on October 21 at 9:30 p.m. KST and air every Wednesday-Thursday, replacing When I Was the Most Beautiful.
