‘The Light In Your Eyes’ makes history in JTBC drama viewership

JTBC’s ongoing fantasy series The Light In Your Eyes scored another success Tuesday night when its latest episode recorded a nationwide and Seoul audience share of 6.6 percent and 8.1 percent, respectively, becoming the first ever Monday-Tuesday JTBC drama that hit 6 percent in viewership and setting a new benchmark for television ratings on the said time slot.

The Light In Your Eyes (also known as Dazzling), which comes from the PD-writer team of Awl, tells the story of a woman (played by Han Ji-min) who uses her ability to travel through time to her advantage but somehow gets stuck living the older version of herself (Kim Hye-ja). Nam Joo-hyuk (Bride of the Water God) is playing the male lead in the drama.

As far as cable ratings are concerned, The Light In Your Eyes‘ recent achievement indicates that the series is becoming more and more popular among domestic TV viewers over time, ending its third week and the first half of its 12-episode run with a viewership that more than doubled the number (3.2 percent) it obtained during its premiere. Data from Nielsen Korea show that its newest rating broke its previous highest record of 5.8 percent.

JTBC started broadcasting dramas on Mondays and Tuesdays in 2011 with Padam Padam, whose rating peaked at 2.2%. Nine more shows were subsequently broadcast on the same time slot over a 3-year period, with the last one being Yoo-na’s Street that recorded a peak rating of 2.8%. It seemed that all ten shows did not obtain decent ratings, let alone surpass 3 percent, for JTBC and that could have been one of the reasons behind the network’s move to stop its drama programming during the said time slot in 2014.

However, the network resumed broadcasting prime time Monday-Tuesday dramas three years later with the premiere of Just Between Lovers in December 2017 and has since maintained airing such shows at the start of each week. Among the six dramas that were completely aired so far, Miss Hammurabi, The Beauty Inside, and Life were the only ones that managed to surpass 5 percent in ratings. Life used to be the highest-rated Monday-Tuesday JTBC drama with its peak rating of 5.6 percent. But that title is already gone now that The Light In Your Eyes just made history.

Meanwhile, tvN’s The Crowned Clown continues to dominate the Monday-Tuesday time slot with a still very impressive nationwide rating of 9.5 percent. The performances of free-to-air series in the ratings race pale into significance when compared with this figure. For their most recent episodes, SBS’s Haechi got 6.4%, KBS2’s Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho 2 6.3 %, and MBC’s Item 3.8%.
