tvN’s The Crowned Clown, also known as The Man Who Became King, surpassed 9% in TV ratings for the second time during its run. According to Nielsen Korea, a TV audience measurement company, the drama’s 11th episode broadcast on February 12 recorded a 9.3% nationwide viewership. With 5 more episodes up for release in the next three weeks, the historical series is likely to surpass this figure and achieve double-digit viewership, which is considered a remarkable feat for cable dramas.
The Crowned Clown stars Yeo Jin-goo (Reunited Worlds) as King Lee Heon and his doppelganger, clown Ha Seon, who is brought in to pretend to be the king when the latter faces the threat of assassination. Over time, Ha Seon develops romantic feelings for the beautiful queen Yoo So-woon, played by Lee Se-young (Hwayugi). The drama is a remake of the hit 2012 Korean film Masquerade, in which actor Lee Byung-hun essayed the role of the king and his doppelganger.
In its time slot, The Crowned Clown was competing with JTBC’s romantic comedy Clean With Passion For Now starring Kim Yoo-jung, Yoon Kyun-sang and Song Jae-rim, which ended its run on February 4 with a rating of 1.6%. Another JTBC drama, The Light In Your Eyes starring Han Ji-min, Kim Hye-ja and Nam Joo-hyuk, has now taken its place. The Light In Your Eyes, an inter-generational fantasy-romance drama, premiered on February 11 with a strong 3.2% rating—which it maintained in last night’s broadcast—and is expected to give The Crowned Clown a solid competition.
Meanwhile, another sageuk, Haechi, is taking the lead in the ratings race among free-to-air series. The SBS drama, starring Jung Il-woo, Go Ara, and Kwon Yool, also premiered on February 11 with an average rating of 6.5% for its first and second episodes. This figure slightly increased to 6.6% for its two episodes yesterday. MBC’s action-mystery drama Item starring movie star Ju Ji-hoon also debuted on the same day with its first two episodes obtaining an average rating of 4.4%, which slightly decreased to 4.3% for its two episodes in the following day.
The latest episodes of KBS2’s Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho 2, another Monday-Tuesday drama, recorded 3.8 and 5.8 percent in ratings.
