Sung Dong-il joins Jun Ji-hyun, Ju Ji-hoon in upcoming mystery drama ‘Jiri Mountain’

Veteran actor Sung Dong-il is confirmed to star alongside Jun Ji-hyun and Ju Ji-hoon in the highly anticipated mystery series Jiri Mountain (literal translation), sources from the project revealed on September 4.

Jiri Mountain will be set against the picturesque background of Jirisan, the highest peak in mainland South Korea. It will tell the stories of people who have decided to roam around and climb the unexplored areas within Jirisan National Park, unsuspecting of any danger that could befall them. Luckily, two mountain rangers, one an expert and the other a rookie, are prepared to put their lives on the line to rescue distressed trekkers.

Earlier, Jun Ji-hyun (The Legend of the Blue Sea) has signed up to play the female protagonist Seo Yi-gang, the best mountain ranger at Jirisan National Park. Confirmed to act opposite her is Ju Ji-hoon (Hyena), who has taken on the role of Kang Hyun-jo, a mysterious, newbie ranger who worked as a military captain in the past. Actor Oh Jung-se (The Good Detective) was also previously reported to be in talks for the project. Though specific details about his character remain under wraps, Sung Dong-il is expected to portray a major role in the series as well.

Sung has been in the entertainment industry for quite some time, playing notable characters who were either tremendously loved or extremely despised by the viewers. In the field of television acting, he showed unparalleled performances in various dramas, including Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), The Legend of the Blue Sea (2016–2017), Hwarang (2016–2017), Prison Playbook (2017–2018), Miss Hammurabi (2018), and The Cursed (2020). Most recently, the actor graced the small screen with a cameo in the medical slash musical friendship series Hospital Playlist (2020).

Jiri Mountain will be helmed by director Lee Eung-bok of Mr. Sunshine (2018) and penned by screenwriter Kim Eun-hee of the Kingdom series (2019, 2020). Even with network negotiations still ongoing, the drama is already slated to crank up its filming this month with a target to air in 2021.
