Critically acclaimed Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda is confirmed to make his first venture into Korean entertainment with the upcoming film Broker (literal title), and what better way to do it than have A-list actors Song Kang-ho, Bae Doo-na, and Gang Dong-won as leads?
Broker centers on a “baby box,” a mysterious vessel designed for people who want leave their babies anonymously if they feel that they are unable to raise them. It will be spearheaded by Hirokazu Kore-eda, an internationally renowned director whose achievements include taking home the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for the movie Like Father, Like Son, as well as winning the coveted Palme d’Or, the highest distinction a participant can get at the said event, for the 2018 drama film Shoplifters.
Along with CJ Entertainment’s confirmation of the casting news, Director Hirokazu Kore-eda himself revealed in a statement how exactly the project was conceptualized, saying, “Plans for Broker started five years ago, and as always, it all began with coming up with a list of potential lead actors. I met Song Kang-ho (Parasite) for the first time at the Busan International Film Festival and Gang Dong-won (Peninsula) at Tokyo when he was there for work. Then, I have continued our correspondence as we seemed to always run into each other in Tokyo, Busan, Seoul, and Cannes. We only exchanged greetings at first, but it spontaneously brought us to talking about a possible collaboration in a film.”
As for his past professional experience with the remaining lead star, the director said, “I worked with Bae Doo-na in 2009, and I told her, ‘I hope we get to do this together again, but next time, you will be portraying a human character.’ It has taken us 10 years, but that dream of mine is finally going to happen.” The previous Japanese movie he is referring to was titled Air Doll, where Bae (The Drug King) played an inflatable doll, who miraculously develops consciousness and soon falls in love with its owner.
He closed his statement with a compliment to his future crew and declaring his aspirations for the new film. He shared, “Now, I will be working on a movie with staff members and Korean actors whom I greatly admire and respect. I am very excited to work on a script that aims to bring out the best from the three great actors. I hope to effectively direct a thrilling, heartwarming, and emotional film so I could fully share this excitement with you all. Just like in my latest film, I will be working away from my native county and language. What message can I impart to be able to break the boundaries of language and culture that exist among us? What is the true essence of being a director? I am looking forward to answering those questions through this project.”
Broker will be produced by Zip Cinema and distributed by CJ ENM. It is slated to crank up filming in 2021.
