Actress Song Hye-kyo (Descendants of the Sun) has received an offer to play the lead role in a new drama called Boyfriend. “It is true that Song Hye Kyo has received the script for the drama ‘Boyfriend.’ However, she is just considering the offer and is not confirmed,” her agency commented on May 28.
(UPDATE: However, a May 29 news from Korea Joongang Daily [source 2] reported that “Song Hye-kyo will star in her first drama since getting married, according to an industry source,” confirming that the actress was already cast in the drama. The news report also explicitly stated that her co-star is Park Bo-gum.)
Boyfriend centers on a woman who has everything in the world and an ordinary man who seems like he has nothing. The drama is a romantic love story that deals with the struggles people face if they abandon their social status and family name. Park Bo-gum, who was revealed previously to have been courted for the series, is still in talks to appear in the drama. The character offered to him is one named Kim Jin-hyuk, an ordinary guy who works several part-time jobs and manages to embark on a trip abroad with the money he saved from his work.
Song Hye Kyo has been offered the role of Cha Soo-hyun, daughter of a politician who has become a member of the National Assembly, the mayor of Seoul, and a political party delegate. She was forced into marrying a very rich man as soon as she graduated from college but she ends up becoming a divorcee. She then meets someone as she travels abroad. If the actress accepts the offer, the drama will become her comeback project after the hit series Descendants of the Sun and her first since getting married.
Boyfriend is written by Yoo Young-a who penned the series Entertainer and Bel Ami. The drama has yet to secure a broadcaster but it is set to air in the second half of 2018.
