Song Hye-kyo to reunite with ‘Descendants of the Sun’ writer

A-list actress and Encounter star Song Hye-kyo has been roped in to headline Kim Eun-sook’s upcoming small-screen project.

On January 5, an official from Studio Dragon, a Korean production company whose credits include the popular dramas Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017), Love Alarm (2019), Hotel del Luna (2019), and Start-Up (2020), among others, shared the casting news with media outlet YTN Star. “Song Hye-kyo will appear as [the] female protagonist [of the] new drama being prepared by Kim Eun-sook,” the source said.

According to the report, specific details about the series, such as its title and broadcast schedule, have not been decided yet. The news, however, further revealed that Memories of the Alhambra and Record of Youth’s PD Ahn Gil-ho has been signed to helm the production and is currently working on the casting process.

Song Hye-kyo is a recognized Hallyu (Korean wave) artist with a great number of hit television series under her belt, including the classic melodrama Autumn in My Heart (2000) and rom-com Full House (2004). In 2016, Song enjoyed a significant boost in her acting career with her lead-role performance, opposite co-star Song Joong-ki, in Kim Eun-sook’s mega-hit, action-romance drama Descendants of the Sun. The 16-episode KBS2 series became immensely popular globally and domestically and received critical acclaim and credit for positively impacting South Korea’s tourism and culture.

Song Hye-kyo’s upcoming drama with The King: Eternal Monarch’s Kim Eun-sook will reportedly begin filming during the second half of 2021.
