Shin Min-ah’s new mystery-thriller film ‘Diva’ releases first poster, confirms September premiere

Along with the announcement of its highly anticipated premiere month, upcoming mystery-thriller movie Diva presents the transformation of its lead actress Shin Min-ah in an utterly ominous initial poster.

Diva tells the story of Lee Young (Shin Min-ah, My Love, My Bride), a renowned diver nicknamed the “Diva of the Diving World.” She cares deeply for her fellow diver and friend Soo Jin (Lee Yoo-young, I Am Home) and decides to change her event to synchronized swimming so that both of them could take the spotlight. In the course of their rigorous practice for the Olympics selection round, the two get involved in a strange car accident that claims Lee Young’s memories and causes Soo Jin’s mysterious disappearance. As Lee Young struggles to get on top of her profession once again, odd memories with Soo Jin creep back into her consciousness. The overwhelming pressure, feeling of loss, and episodic flashes of disturbing scenes inside her head become too much to bear and ultimately awaken Lee Young’s inner madness.

In the first promo visual for the film, Shin Min-ah convincingly depicts the maladjusted state of the protagonist Lee Young with an unsettling stare right through the camera and a faint hint of a creepy smile. The caption above her head reads, “You want my spot?” The question suggests an intense competition and resentment underneath what seemed to be a close friendship between Lee Young and her missing diver friend Soo Jin. In addition, a paradoxical phrase sits on top of the title and states, “The descent to the top,” describing the irony that exists in the sport of diving in which an athlete must execute the most perfect fall in order to land at the peak of their career.

Among the previously confirmed cast members of the project are stars Lee Kyu-hyung (Juror 8), who plays Lee Young and Soo Jin’s swimming coach Kim Hyun-min, as well as Oh Ha-nee (Between the Seasons), who takes on the role of Mi Ok, an athlete who admires Lee Young.

Diva is penned by Yoo Young-seon and is helmed by Jo Seul-ye, an actress (The Wicked) and screenwriter (A Taxi Driver) who is set to mark her directing debut in the film. It is slated to hit the big screen in September.
