Shin Hye-sun, Kim Jung-hyun, Bae Jong-ok, Kim Tae-woo confirmed to star in new drama ‘Queen Cheorin’

Upcoming tvN historical-comedy series Queen Cheorin has announced an exciting lineup of star featuring leads Shin Hye-sun and Kim Jung-hyun as well as cast members Bae Jong-ok and Kim Tae-woo.

Queen Cheorin (tentative title) is a fusion “sageuk” or Korean historical drama that tells the story of a modern man whose soul gets trapped inside the body of a queen from the Joseon era.

Shin Hye-sun has signed up for the character Kim So-yong, a queen who has always tried hard to fulfill her filial duties to her father. She starts acting strange, however, when the soul of a carefree man takes over her.

The project marks a milestone for Shin as it is her first role in a historical drama since her television debut in 2012. The actress has played several supporting roles in many hit series including The Legend of the Blue Sea (2016–2017) until she landed her first small-screen lead role in the family drama My Golden Life (2017–2018). She has been at the peak of her acting career since and is perceived to stay there, most especially after her commendable portrayal of a blind ballerina in the romantic fantasy series Angel’s Last Mission: Love (2019).

Meanwhile, Kim Jung-hyun will suit up as Cheoljong, a king who deliberately takes on a double persona. In the eyes of his manipulative clan members, he acts as the easy-going puppet that they trained him to be. On the inside, he fears of becoming an incompetent ruler whose reign will not be remembered for anything significant. His own anxieties drive him to dream and prepare for a reform.

Kim Jung-hyun gained positive recognition in 2018 for his performances in the youth series Welcome to Waikiki and in the melodrama The Time. However, his “method acting” training resulted in an eating and sleeping disorder that forced him to drop out of the latter halfway through its production. He made his small-screen comeback in the popular rom-com drama Crash Landing on You (2019–2020), which propelled him towards international fame.

Joining the two lead stars is actress Bae Jong-ok as Queen Sunwon, wife of the late King Sunjo. She holds true power over the entire kingdom and controls King Cheoljong in order to fulfill her own wishes. Bae last appeared in the suspense drama Graceful Family (2019). In addition, The Tale of Nokdu (2019) actor Kim Tae-woo will play as Kim Jwa-geun, Queen Sunwon’s ambitious brother who has an intense hunger for power.

The production team behind the series has relayed that the charm of each character is integral to the drama’s unique storyline, saying, “The actors will display each of their talents in bringing the distinct personalities of their own characters to life.” They also added, “We are aiming to make the audience feel the charm of this new fusion historical comedy. Please look forward to it.”

Queen Cheorin is currently in the works and will reveal more details soon.
