Seo Yea-ji turns down OCN’s ‘Island’

Controversy-ridden actress Seo Yea-ji’s appearance in the upcoming OCN drama Island has been cancelled.

A representative from Seo’s agency Gold Medalist confirmed that the actress has decided not to appear in the drama. The drama is expected to begin casting its female lead again.

Island is an exorcism drama based on a webtoon of the same name. It is set on the scenic Jeju Island and tells the story of an immortal monster hunter called Ban who saves the world from demons. He needs a woman to help put an end to his cursed life. Won Mi-ho is a wealthy heiress who is being pursued by goblins in the island. These two characters are joined by John, a former priest who grew up in the United States.

Originally, Kim Nam-gil (The Fiery Priest) and Seo Yea-ji (It’s Okay To Not Be Okay) were slated to take the lead roles, while Cha Eun-woo (True Beauty) is in talks to join them. However, Seo came under fire last month after a series of controversies erupted regarding her involvement with ex-flame Kim Jung-hyun’s (Mr. Queen) inappropriate behavior on the set of the drama The Time (2018), forging her academic background at a university in Spain, and allegations of being a school bully.

Island is helmed by director Bae Jong and screenwriter Jang Yoon-mi. It was expected to air in the second half of the year, but recent developments are expected to result in changes to the original schedule.
