“School 2017” director explains reason behind casting Kim Se-jeong

School 2017  director Park Sin-jeok recently talked about why he chose Kim Se-jeong to take on the role of the female lead in the upcoming KBS drama. The director talked about this in a recent press conference which took place on July 11, less than a week before the drama’s premiere.

Park Sin-jeok said that he started to meet with a lot of rookie actresses back in March this year even before the script was completed. Out of the more than 200 who auditioned for the role of Ra Eun-ho, he said that Kim Se-jeong stood out because he initially thought she would not make an exceptional delivery since she is a singer and not an actress. Park Sin-jeok shared, “However, she did really well with the freestyle acting she prepared, and she expressed difficult acting well even without a script.”

The director continued to reveal that after he shortlisted over 200 auditionees to a small number, he had three meetings each with those selected. During those meetings, he described Kim Se-jeong as someone who has a bright energy and showed that she wanted the part so bad because she worked so hard to get it. Park Sin-jeok pointed out that he felt if he would give Kim Se-jeong a chance, he could trust her. As they started shooting scenes for School 2017, the director found out that the rookie actress has more to show and has more potential when it comes to acting.

Just recently, new posters for School 2017 were released by the network. The seventh installment of the School franchise will revolve around high school students facing the problems of the youth today. It is the first drama project in which Kim Se-jeong is playing the main character. She is joined by fellow rookie actors Kim Jung-hyun (Rebel: Thief Who Stole the People) and Jang Dong-yoon (Solomon’s Perjury).

School 2017 will air on Mondays and Tuesdays beginning July 17.
