Yoon Kyun-sang as Hong Gil-dong. Being the son of a common house slave, Hong Gil-dong grows up hiding his strength until one day he realizes he must act against those with power who are oppressing the poor people.

Chae Soo-bin as Song Ga-ryung. Song Ga-ryung is a young widow who desires to kill King Yeonsangun to avenge the death of her husband. He meets Hong Gil-dong and fall in love with him.

Kim Ji-suk as King Yeonsangun / Lee Yong. King Yeonsangun is bloodthirsty ruler of Joseon who is born with a golden spoon in his mouth but is unable to win the favor of his people.

Lee Ha-nui as Jang Nok-su. Jang Nok-su is a gisaeng-turned-concubine who fall in love with Hong Gil-dong.

Kim Sang-joong as Hong Amo-gae. Hong Amo-gae is the poor servant and father of Hogng Gil-dong. He defies his low standing in society to provide for Gil-dong and his older brother Gil-hyun.
