We might be seeing actress Park Hye-su back on the small screen soon!
On June 29, an official from the drama station reported that, “Park Hye-su will be playing the lead role in the upcoming MBC drama The Red Sleeve Cuff (literal title), which will air early next year.”
The series is set in the Joseon period and will tell the story of the royal concubine Seong Ui-bin (a real historical figure), the birth mother of Prince Munhyo, who was a court lady before rising to the position of the highest-ranking queen. It will feature the life of an ordinary woman who becomes the mother of the crown prince.
An official from Park’s agency, Huayi Brothers, confirmed in a report that the actress “is positively considering the [offer] for the new drama The Red Sleeve Cuff.”
Park Hye-su was proposed the role of court lady Seong Deok-im who turned into Queen Seong Ui-bin. Her family suffered from a major crisis when she was a child, so she has to go through difficult challenges growing up.
If she accepts the role, this will be Park’s comeback series after four years, following her last roles in tvN’s My Shy Boss and in SBS’s historical fantasy series Saimdang, Memoir of Colors, both in 2017.
The actress first caught the attention of the public as a contestant of the SBS show K-pop Star (Season 4) in 2014. Since then, she has appeared in a few series over the years such as Yong-pal (2015), Hello, My Twenties! (2016), and My Shy Boss (2017).
The screenplay for the series will be based on the 2017 novel series “Otsomae Beulgeun Kkeuddong” written by Kang Mi-kang, which mixes factual and fictional narratives in a historical setting.
Back in 2007, the MBC series Lee San, Wind of the Palace also told the side story of royal concubine Seong Ui-bin. After getting involved with Crown Prince Lee San, who eventually becomes King Jeongjo, court lady Seong Deok-im catches the interest of the prince, and he persuades her to marry him, which she refuses a couple of times. When he was crowned King, she eventually became his royal concubine.
The drama is targeting to premiere early in the first half of 2021, but production and other cast members are yet to be confirmed.
