‘Parasite’ claims top prize at 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards

Bong Joon-ho‘s Parasite has added yet another trophy to its shelf! This time, it is the coveted best ensemble prize at the 26th Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards that took place on January 19 at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall.

The globally-acclaimed movie—which won the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes International Film Festival—became the first foreign-language film in history to win the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, which is given to the entire cast of a film for their combined exceptional performances. Parasite was the first-ever Asian film and only the second foreign-language film to be nominated in this category. It was competing with “Bombshell,” “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (see the complete list of winners here).

The award was given to the main cast of the film, which is composed of Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Lee Jung-eun, Jang Hye-jin, Cho Yeo-jeong, Jeong Hyun-jun, Jung Ji-so, and Park Myung-hoon. The first five actors appeared ecstatic after being given a standing ovation by the Hollywood actors as they received the award, with Song Kang-ho saying, “I’m so honored to receive this award in front of such amazing actors that I admire. I will never forget this beautiful night.”

Meanwhile, Choi Woo-shik expressed his wish to see more foreign-language films being recognized and Bong Joon-ho was seen filming the cast members’ reactions to their historic win. Jang Hye-jin and Cho Yeo-jeong, unfortunately, couldn’t make it to the ceremony.

Now that Parasite has added yet another historic win to its bag, all eyes are on the 92nd Academy Awards Ceremony, to be held on February 9. The film has been nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay.
