10 Most Buzzworthy Korean Dramas from May 20 to 26, 2019

Wednesday-Thursday dramas One Spring Night, Her Private Life, and Angel’s Last Mission: Love come in first, second, and third, respectively, in this week’s (May 20-26) ranking. These three dramas represent 40% of the total buzz, which indicates that for every 100 drama discussions and/or mentions online in South Korea, 40 are about only these three shows. Considering that there are about 25 dramas included in the ranking every week, this number is significantly large and attests to the popularity of the said series. Her Private Life aired its penultimate episodes this week, while One Spring Night and Angel’s Last Mission: Love just made their premieres.

One Spring Night is the first ever drama this month to obtain a buzz score higher than 20%. The last show to achieve a similar record in April is The Fiery Priest, which topped the ranking of the most talked about Korean dramas for that entire month.

Another notable and newcomer in the ranking is the upcoming historical fantasy drama Asadal Chronicles starring Song Joong-ki and Kim Ji-won. It has yet to premiere on June 1 but it already generated so much buzz to make a 5th place finish in the ranking. Given its star-studded cast and grand production, it will most likely top the ranking for the week ending June 2.

The biggest loser this week is Absolute Boyfriend, also a Wednesday-Thursday drama, which fell to the no. 10 spot by eight places. Save Me 2 is the only Wednesday-Thursday Korean drama that did not place in the ranking.

What does it mean by being “buzzworthy?” When a drama or actor is buzzworthy, it means that many people talk about or discuss them in various online platforms such as blogs, forums, and social media. The “buzzworthiness” of a drama is measured and expressed quantitatively by Good Data Corporation on a weekly basis. The buzzworthiness is NOT directly proportional to TV ratings. Hence, a highest-rated drama is NOT necessarily a buzzworthy drama or vice versa. There are many dramas that obtain above-average audience shares but rarely become the subject of discussions online. On the other hand, there are instances when low-rated dramas or those with below-average to average viewership become the most talked about series. Simply put, a most buzzworthy drama is the “most talked about” drama in town.
