New historical drama ‘Joseon Exorcist’ woos Jung Hye-sung for starring role

Rising actress Jung Hye-sung is being courted to star in Joseon Exorcist, an upcoming historical series reported to be headlined by actors Jang Dong-yoon, Kam Woo-sung, and Park Sung-hoon.

A source from Jung’s agency J Wide Company said on the 14th, “Jung Hye-sung received an offer to appear in the new series and is positively going over it.”

Joseon Exorcist will be a fictional depiction of the Joseon Dynasty’s founding years. In an era that will see the birth of sorcerers and the revival of corpses, King Tae-jong (Kam Woo-sung, The Wind Blows) wields power while trying to fulfill what he and his father had envisioned for the kingdom, even if it means abandoning his own flesh and blood. At his side are Prince Chung-nyung (Jang Dong-yoon, The Tale of Nokdu) and Prince Yang-nyung (Park Sung-hoon, Memorials), second-generation royals similarly skilled at fighting but with differing perceptions of power drives that ultimately push them towards opposite paths.

Jung Hye-sung made her small-screen debut in the drama Friend, Our Legend (2009). She then played various supporting parts in popular series, such as Pride and Prejudice (2014–2015), Oh My Venus (2015–2016), and Love in the Moonlight (2016) before landing her main roles in Good Manager (2017) and Manhole (2017). Her succeeding portrayal of the female protagonist in Oh, The Mysterious (2017–2018) earned her enormous praise from both viewers and critics, highlighted with a nomination for Best New Actress at the 11th Korea Drama Awards. If she accepts the current offer, Jung will be on to play her next role after appearing in the drama Pegasus Market (2019).

Joseon Exorcist will be spearheaded by screenwriter Park Kye-ok of Doctor Prisoner (2019) and PD Shin Kyung-soo of Nokdu Flower (2019). All set to begin filming this October, the drama is currently under discussion to air via SBS in 2021.
