Netflix confirms production of new Korean original series from ‘Extracurricular’ director

Netflix has officially announced the production of its newest Korean original series Undercover (working title). The world’s giant streaming platform is set to work once again with director Kim Jin-min, who recently helmed its highly praised crime-themed youth series Extracurricular (2020).

Undercover will tell the story of a mobster’s daughter who joins a cartel and becomes a mole in the police force to uncover the truth behind her father’s death.

Rising actress Han So-hee is being courted to portray the female protagonist Ji-u, a woman who got herself involved in a secret organization so she could undergo training and avenge the tragic demise of her father. Fueled with the aim of finding out who the culprit is, she digs deeper into the case by going undercover as a cop. However, her plans take an unexpected turn when a detective falls in love with her.

Han made her small-screen acting debut in the 2017 series Into the World Again and proceeded with her first main role in Money Flower that same year. She then joined the supporting cast members of the tvN series 100 Days My Prince (2018) and Abyss (2019). In 2020, Han rose to international fame for her remarkable portrayal of a young mistress in JTBC’s The World of the Married, the highest-rated Korean drama in cable TV history.

In talks to act opposite Han is promising actor Ahn Bo-hyun, who received an offer to play the role of Jeon Pil-do. His character is good-looking, strong, and well-dressed but one who tends to exude a little too much self-confidence at times. Underneath his cold and tough appearance, however, lies a man with a hurtful past who cannot stand to just witness other people experience the same pain that he did. He was on his way to becoming a successful Judo athlete, but a mysterious accident snatched away that dream from him. To seek revenge and catch the person behind his misfortune, he pursues a career as a detective. Ahn last appeared in the hit drama Itaewon Class (2020) and is set to star in the upcoming MBC series Kairos.

Director Kim, who also wowed viewers with his work in The Liar and His Lover (2017) and Lawless Lawyer (2018), is reportedly spearheading the project with screenwriter Kim Ba-da of OCN’s action-fantasy series Hero (2012).

Undercover will be produced by Fleet Co., Ltd and will be available for streaming on Netflix in over 190 countries worldwide.
