It seems like controversies surrounding the drama My Lawyer, Mr. Jo 2: Crime and Punishment are never-ending. According to a source, PD Han Sang-woo and screenwriter Choi Wan-gyu of the series might be replaced—but the show will still be broadcast as scheduled.
The show is getting a lot of attention lately and has announced on February 14 that supporting actors Jo Dal-hwan and Lee Mi-do will be departing from the drama. The agency of both actors released a statement saying that the announcement was sudden and they were not properly informed about the changes.
My Lawyer, Mr. Jo 2 has been plagued with controversies even before it started its production. The casting of Go Hyun-jung for her character sparked an issue as she stepped down from the 2018 legal thriller Return in the middle of production. PD Han Sang-woo came to her defense, saying that she was perfect for the role since her chemistry with Park Shin-yang is natural.
When the show went live in January, there had been rumors about director Han’s departure from the production team. Representatives of KBS responded, saying these were unfounded. Since Go Hyun-jung and Park Shin-yang had differing schedules, they tapped another director to help with shooting scenes for both actors.
The news of actors being laid off then went on one by one. Byun Hee-bong’s departure was first announced. The producers mentioned that the drama revolved around Park Shin-yang and Go Hyun-jung’s characters, hence, the removal of supporting characters halfway through the show could be done to help keep the flow of the drama. Jo Dal-hwan and Lee Mi-do’s departure went next.
Recently, there was also news of chaos among the writers. The ending credits show the names of writers Kim Seo-yeon and Cho Hye-bin, but the names of other writers were excluded. Representatives just responded by saying that there is no main screenwriter and there are several writers who work as a team handling different episodes.
Mr. Lawyer, Mr. Jo 2: Crime and Punishment (also known as Neighborhood Lawyer Jo Deul-ho 2) centers on prosecutor-turned-lawyer, played by Park Shin-yang, who faces new challenges as his license is revoked and his family leaves his side to live abroad. He is forced to leave the industry for a change but troubles related to his job keep following him.
