Romance might be on the cards for our misunderstood King, but the Royal Court’s politics will not let anyone catch a break. Queen So-yong (Shin Hye-sun) keeps falling deeper into the web of royal conspiracies.
Another failed attempt and an alliance between the royal couple
King Cheoljong (Kim Jung-hyun) cannot stop thinking about the Queen. After saving her from what he believes was yet another attempt to take her life, Cheoljong implores her to live her life. He keeps repeating her “No Touch” rule because he understands it to mean “living happily.” It is an interesting confrontation—while So-yong is annoyed at having been stopped, Cheoljong seems to be experiencing a storm of emotions.
Court politics gets even more intense
Kim Byeong-in (Na In-woo) officially enters the Royal Palace, intent on investigating the King. Kim Jwa-geun (Kim Tae-woo) gets updates on the King and Queen’s lake mishap. The Queen Dowager (Jo Yeon-hee) doubles up on her efforts to get Hwa-jin (Seol In-ah) on her side, actively scheming against the Queen, and it looks like Hwa-jin might take her up on that offer.
Jang Bong-hwan tries a new approach
Frustrated that his attempts at escaping aren’t working, Jang Bong-hwan aka So-yong tries a new approach. She visits the Queen Dowager in an attempt to gain insight into the methods of shamanism and dark magic, much to Court Lady Choi’s (Cha Chung-hwa) consternation. Hilariously, Jang imagines So-yong’s soul in her original body, having fun in modern-day Seoul.
A sudden deposal petition
After their adventure in the lake, both So-yong and Cheoljong have matching colds. In the midst of this, the Jo family introduces a petition to depose the Queen, blaming her unpredictable mental state. The King speaks in her favor, followed by Kim Byeong-in. From having no one to speak for her, So-yong is suddenly in the middle of two powerful men having a confrontation about her. So-yong does the smart thing and makes her deposal the problem of the Kim family.
The Queen starts a rumor mill
To combat the rumors following her around. So-yong comes up with an ingenius plan. She hires good-looking storytellers to go around the palace and spread rumors to clear out her name and malign Hwa-jin’s, and it is surprisingly effective. Court Lady Choi is concerned about the Queen’s antics but cannot break her promise not to nag her. She travels all the way to a secluded forest to let out her frustrations. It’s a hilarious scene.
Jo Hwa-jin plays the mind game
After the King asks Hwa-jin to seek her father’s help in stopping the Queen’s deposal, Hwa-jin realizes that he really may be slipping from her grasp. She immediately sets a date for the King and her to consummate their marriage. She also thinks So-yong is playing a wicked game to separate her and the King, but So-yong aka Bong-hwan is simply flirting with Hwa-jin.
The Queen’s deposal
The King and his brother have a tiff over the Queen’s impending deposal. While Prince Yeongpyeong (Yoo Min-kyu) is bent on letting it happen, Cheoljong raises strong objections. Meanwhile, Kim Byeong-in is trying to protect the Queen in his own way. Prince Yeongpyeong extracts a difficult promise from the King, while Queen Dowager leans even more into shamanism to fulfill her plans. Now that Jang Bong-hwan aka So-yong is entangled in court politics, how will she escape?
