True Beauty fans! One of the most awaited webtoon-based dramas of the year is finally coming to K-dramaland!
Actresses Moon Ga-young and Park Yoo-na have been offered to star in the upcoming drama True Beauty, which is based on a popular webtoon of the same name.
KeyEast Entertainment, Moon’s agency, has confirmed that she was offered the lead role. “Moon Ga-young received an offer to star in the new tvN drama ‘True Beauty’ and is positively considering the offer,” an agency representative said after an industry report revealed the production team reached out to to the actress for the role.
True Beauty will follow the story of Im Joo-kyung, a shy, average-looking high schooler with acne issues who loves watching beauty videos online. With the help of makeup, she transforms overnight into an internet star and the prettiest girl in school. She is forced to hide who she really is in order to continue to live as an online goddess. She falls for the only man who has seen her bare face but unexpectedly finds herself in a complicated love triangle. If Moon accepts, she will be playing Joo-kyung.
Moon last starred in Find Me in Your Memory, which ended last May. She is best known for her role in the web series EXO Lives Next Door in 2015, where she starred alongside the members of the boy group EXO. She has starred in many popular series in the past including Welcome to Waikiki 2 (2019), Tempted (2018), and Secret Healer (2016).
On the other hand, Park Yoo-na was reported to have also been proposed a spot in the cast. In response, her agency WIP said, “Park Yoo-na was offered the role of Kang Soo-jin in ‘True Beauty.’ She has not accepted it yet, but she is positively considering it.” If she signs the deal, she will be playing the feisty and popular “goddess” of the campus. The character is described as smart, beautiful, and comes from a prominent family. She will be involved with main characters Lee Su-ho and Im Joo-kyung.
Park’s last series is back in 2019, when she was a part of the cast of Hotel del Luna alongside IU (Lee Ji-eun) and Yeo Jin-goo. She is best known for her roles in the 2018 hit SKY Castle and ID: Gangnam Beauty (2018). She made her small-screen debut in the KBS2 drama Cheer Up! in 2015.
The webtoon was created by Yaongyi and is currently one of the most popular ones in Korea with more than four million subscribers. Last year, it was announced that the webtoon would get a Korean drama adaptation. The author herself made news online after fans found her social media accounts and pointed out the physical resemblance of the female lead to the writer. This led to speculations that the author has based the character on herself.
Meanwhile, Astro’s Cha Eun-woo is also being courted to play the lead role.
Back in April, Cha’s agency Fantagio confirmed that the singer-actor is reviewing the proposal. Cha is a member of the K-pop boy group Astro, who debuted in 2016. He is known for his lead roles in Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (2019) and ID: Gangnam Beauty (2018). His character Do Kyung-seok from the latter drama made him the fans’ top pick for male lead in the webtoon’s drama adaptation, with BLACKPINK’s Jisoo being the pick for the female lead.
Cha has been offered the role of Lee Su-ho, a stoic, handsome, and diligent student with a soft and shy side. He is always the center of attention but he ignores everyone around him by displaying a cold facade. Prior to the announcement, fans online were already pointing out the uncanny resemblance between Cha and the webtoon’s lead, from their looks down to their personality. Cha’s fans refer to him as “face genius.”
Casting for the other male love interest for Joo-kyung is still to be confirmed.
It was reported that Kim Sang-hyeop, who is also behind The King in Love (2017) and Extraordinary You (2019), will be the director of the drama. Writer Lee Si-eun of Ugly Miss Young-ae (2007) will be penning the script.
True Beauty will be produced by Bon Factory and is expected to premiere sometime during the second half of 2020.
