It’s official! Rising stars Moon Ga-young, Cha Eun-woo, and Hwang In-yeop are set to headline tvN’s upcoming romantic youth series True Beauty.
Based on the popular webtoon “Goddess Advent” by manhwa (Korean term for comics) artist Yaongyi, True Beauty centers on a schoolgirl who grew up getting constantly bullied for falling short of the many attractive physical qualities set by the society for young women. After learning the art of applying makeup through online tutorial videos, she transforms her appearance and becomes a famous campus goddess overnight. However, her current ideal life turns upside down when she crosses paths with two handsome guys, both of whom share a painful past.
Moon Ga-young has been cast to play the female protagonist Im Ju-gyeong, a bubbly and kind young lady whose hobbies include normal stuff like reading comics, listening to alternative rock music, and eating lots of comfort food. Coming from a family with good genes, Ju-gyeong has always been self-conscious of the fact that she is the only one who has not inherited her parents’ desirable traits. However, when she tried the makeup application tips she learned from YouTube videos, she instantly became Saebom High School’s prettiest girl. Despite acquiring the confidence to present herself out in the public, her newly established reputation also slammed her inner self-esteem as she grew even more insecure about her bare face. Fearing that she will not be accepted for her true looks, she maintains her fake personality as an admired influencer by eating small portions of food during lunch, lying about her music preferences, and never leaving the house without makeup on.
Following her notable performances in Live Up to Your Name (2017), Tempted (2018), and Welcome to Waikiki 2 (2019), Moon starred alongside Kim Dong-wook in MBC’s romance melodrama Find Me in Your Memory (2020).
Meanwhile, Cha Eun-woo will transform into Lee Su-ho, a fine but unfriendly young man who excels both in his engineering studies and in sports. Su-ho used to be a friendly person, but a series of unfortunate incidents in the past drove him into depression and changed him into the cold guy that he is now known as. Upon meeting Ju-gyeong, he somehow finds himself showing her his warm and caring personality.
Cha is a member of the boy band Astro and has made his small-screen debut in the series Hit the Top (2017). He then landed his first lead role in the drama ID: Gangnam Beauty (2018) and later starred in the sageuk (historical) series Rookie Historian Goo Hae-ryung (2019).
Completing the main trio is actor Hwang In-yeop who signed up to portray Han Seo-jun, a striking and sociable man who is highly caring and protective of those close to him. He is not diligent in his studies and considers college education as an option rather than a requirement for his future. Coming from a poor family, Seo-jun’s biggest insecurity is his financial status. He tends to feel envious of others, like Su-ho, who grew up having a well-off background. He made a group called “Three S’s” with him and their third best friend Se-yeon in middle school, but their relationship fell apart when Se-yeon took his own life.
Having gained positive attention for his roles in the web series WHY (2018) and Freshman (2019), Hwang ventured into television acting as a supporting cast member in KBS2’s The Tale of Nokdu (2019). Currently, he is gearing up to appear in the upcoming JTBC rom-com drama 18 Again (2020).
The production team behind the project shared, “Three actors with high onscreen chemistry and irreplaceable charms are expected to meet and show a bright, refreshing synergy. Coming to you in the second half of this year is a lovely romantic comedy, so we ask for your interest.”
True Beauty is helmed by Kim Sang-hyeop of Extraordinary You (2019) and penned by screenwriter Lee Si-eun of Top Star Yoo-baek (2018).
