If you’re a follower of K-dramas, then you might know rising actress Han So-hee as the gorgeous and youthful Yeo Da-kyung from JTBC’s record-breaking drama The World of the Married. As a self-proclaimed member of Ji Sun-woo’s (Kim Hee-ae) fan club, I went into online investigator mode and uncovered interesting facts about the actress who is behind the character everyone currently loves to hate.
This article might contain spoilers for The World of the Married.
Han So-hee (한소희), whose real name is Lee So-hee, is a 25-year old South Korean actress and model. She hails from the city of Ulsan and was born on November 24, 1994─ yes, a Scorpio, which explains how she’s able to convincingly portray the jealous but passionately loving Da-kyung. She makes the perfect glamourous “other woman” as she boasts of an impressive height of 169 centimeters that matches a weight of only 47 kgs. This up-and-coming star received her education from Ulsan Girl’s High School and Sejong University.
Career Beginnings and Acting Debut
The road to Han So-hee’s dreams was not an easy one. She had a humble start when she decided to switch careers, leaving arts major in university for acting. She moved to Seoul at the age of 20 with only 300,000 Korean won (around $240 USD) in her pocket. She worked tirelessly at a bar, struggling to make ends meet. After over a year, she slowly began making a name for herself on social media and welcomed more and more followers by the day.
She garnered national attention for her exotic looks in a Ritz Cracker commercial in 2016. Since then, she has gained popularity by featuring in commercials for companies such as SK Telecom, Dongseo Food, and Banila Co. Her acting debut was a minor role in the SBS fantasy drama Reunited Worlds (2017) where she played Lee Seo-won, a hospital director’s daughter.
In the same year, Han So-hee got her first lead role in the MBC drama Money Flower (2017), playing a secret lover to the scion of a fortune group. She then displayed her acting skills to a new audience as a princess in the historical series 100 Days My Prince (2018). Shortly after, she took on a guest role in the drama special After the Rain (2018).
In 2019, she appeared in tvN’s fantasy rom-com Abyss as a disappearing bride-to-be, considered by many to be her breakthrough role. This was followed by her sudden leap to international stardom through her most daring role yet – a married man’s lover-turned-wife (Yeo Da-kyung) in JTBC’s psychological thriller The World of the Married (on-going). The show has recently become the highest-rated cable Korean drama of all time in terms of average rating for its first half (8 episodes) and is expected to break even more records in its second half.
Han So-hee is currently represented by the agency U-ATTO Entertainment.
In the field of reality TV, So-hee has been a regular cast member of MBC’s variety show I Can Hear the Ocean (2019).
So-hee has also appeared in various music videos since the beginning of her career: “Tell Me What to Do” by K-pop boy group SHINee (2016), “That Girl” by soloist Jung Yong-hwa, “The Hardest Part” by Roy Kim, and “You&I” by musical duo MeloMance.
Following the success of The World of the Married, So-hee has caught the eye of fashion magazine editors in Korea. In the May 2020 issue of Grazia, the actress shows off her natural and sultry charm in the pictorial feature “To Be Curious”. She also earned a space in the May 2020 issue of Dazed Korea; the issue is called “A Star is Born” and features a photoshoot capturing the young actress’s sensual and angelic side. In interviews by both magazines, So-hee talks about her role as Yeo Da-kyung and how she perceives the character in comparison to her real self.
Awards and Nominations
In her debut year, So-hee bagged the “Commercial Film (CF) Model Award” at the 2017 MAXIM K-model Awards. She also received a “Best New Actress” nomination at the MBC Drama Awards (2017) for her role in Money Flower. Now that she has starred in The World Of The Married, one of the most popular dramas of the year, and received praise for her acting, it is only a matter of time before So-hee sweeps this year’s award show nominations and garners more recognition in the entertainment industry.
Just when her career was taking a positive turn, netizens began digging up controversial old snaps of the actress. So-hee has been receiving backlash over past pictures of tattoos and smoking. Her pursuit of an acting career resulted in the removal of the tattoos but the remnants are still evident on her body. However, not everyone reacted negatively. Some online news and features platforms published the pictures and labeled them “dangerously sexy” and “badass” and many fans were quick to agree. One of So-hee’s friends also came to her defense, calling out keyboard warriors for their double standards and stating, “Tattoos and smoking only becomes an issue when women do it. Honestly, it’s just sexist and discriminatory why some things can be okay for male actors, but contentious for actresses.”
Social Media Presence
So-hee is currently followed by 1.3 million fans on her Instagram account, @xeesoxee, where she shares sweet photos of her daily life. From close-up selfies to pictorial stills, her IG grid has got it all covered. The actress also has a cafe blogsite on NAVER, the Korean social platform for celebrities, and interacts with her fanbase regularly.
So, how do you feel now that you have come to know Han So-hee a bit better? As for me, let’s just say that I will be adhering to the proverb, “Despise the character but admire the actor.”
