MBC courts Choi Jin-hyuk for lead role in “Hospital Ship”

Actor Choi Jin-hyuk (Tunnel) is considering to take the role of a doctor in MBC’s medical drama Hospital Ship. The title of the upcoming series refers to a ship that sails around small islands to provide medical services to the locals who live there. The drama will focus on the lives of young doctors aboard the ship.

If Choi Jin-hyuk accepts the offer, he will be playing a doctor of internal medicine named Kwak Hyun. His character is described to be “caring but not soft, and strong but not offending.” He will be playing the role opposite actress Ha Ji-won, who has been offered the lead female role in the drama. She is up to play Song Eun-jae, a surgeon who joins the hospital ship to avoid public scrutiny after her family is ruined. Hospital Ship will be Ha Ji-won’s newest drama project after her two-year hiatus. She was last seen in SBS weekend drama The Time that I loved You alongside actor Lee Jin-wook (Goodbye, Mr. Black). An official statement is yet to be announced regarding her involvement in the project.

Choi Jin-hyuk recently starred in OCN’s crime drama Tunnela 16-episode series about a 1980s cop who runs into a tunnel while chasing a serial killer and ends up traveling to 2017. The drama’s last episode was aired on May 21 and recorded 6.490 % in nationwide viewer ratings according to Nielsen Korea. It achieved record-breaking ratings during its run and surpassed the record set by its predecessor Voice, becoming the highest-rated drama of cable network OCN.

Hospital Ship will be directed by A New Leaf director Park Jae-bum and written by Secret Door screenwriter Yoon Seon-joo. It is set to air on MBC’s Wednesday-Thursday slot in August, following Ruler: Master of the Mask and Man Who Dies to Live.
