Data from Nielsen Korea show that the nationwide viewer ratings of Legend of the Blue Sea ranges from 15 to 20 %. The drama is the second kdrama to break through the 20 % mark in 2017.

The drama has been performing well since its premiere in November last year in terms of ratings. Data from Nielsen Korea show that its first episode recorded an impressive 16.4 % in nationwide viewer ratings, which is the highest among the pilot episode ratings of all Korean prime time dramas in 2016. It was able to reach 18 % for its 6th episode and maintained its high ratings since then.

The drama’s popularity could be due to its famous leading actors Lee Min-ho and Jun Ji-hyun. Lee Min-ho is considered one of the well-known actors in Korea and abroad today. He hit stardom in 2009 when he played the leading role in KBS drama Boys Over Flowers. He last starred in The Heirs in 2013, a drama that also achieved high ratings during its run. Jun Ji-hyun, meanwhile, is a popular actress herself. Her last drama My Love From The Star was loved by many Korean and international fans and attained a peak rating of 28.1 percent. She won the Grand Prize in Paeksang Arts Awards in 2014 for her performance in the said drama.

Legend of the Blue Sea is inspired by a classic Joseon legend about a fisherman who captured a mermaid and tells the story of a mermaid who chose to live on land with the man he loves. It is written by Park Ji-eun, the same writer of My Love From The Star, and directed by Jin Hyuk, the director of Lee Min-ho’s 2011 drama City Hunter. It airs every Wednesdays and Thursdays at 22:00 KST on SBS with three remaining episodes to air next week and the week after. It will be followed by Saimdang, Light’s Diary on January 26, 2017.

Me? Just an ordinary lad with an extraordinary (says this something called 'stereotype') habit of watching Korean dramas. It started with action-filled City Hunter and the rest, as they say, is history.
