Lee Joo-young of ‘Itaewon Class’ transforms into a high school athlete in new film ‘Baseball Girl’

Rising actress Lee Joo-young is set to make a comeback, this time to the big screen, in the upcoming inspirational film Baseball Girl.

Created as part of the “Advanced Feature Film” course at the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), Baseball Girl tells the motivational story of high school baseball player Joo Soo-in (played by Lee Joo-young) as she journeys towards her ambition of becoming a professional athlete. Despite being nicknamed “genius baseball girl” for her unbelievable fastballs, she soon faces the high wall of gender bias for venturing into a male-dominated sport.

In the trailer for the film, a focused and determined Soo-in is shown to be enduring harsh sessions of training as a pitcher while the background voices of her coach, mother, and friends say, “How did a girl get into high school baseball?,” “What are you going to do after you graduate? Do you have any plans?,” “Dream on! Do you really think they will call you?,” “Going pro is a good idea, but it is easier said than done.,” and “If it does not work, give it up. That’s not embarrassing.”

In response to their discouraging statements, Soo-in seriously throws a strong ball while her voice-over says, “How do people know my future? Even I don’t know it. I will try. I won’t give up.”

Lee recently rose to international fame for her portrayal of the transgender chief cook Ma Hyun-yi in the popular webtoon-based drama Itaewon Class (2020) where she starred alongside actors Park Seo-joon and Kim Da-mi. The 28-year old actress will be showcasing her versatility as she transforms into a high school dreamer in the current film.

Baseball Girl is helmed by director and screenwriter Choi Yun-tae who previously worked on the 2016 short film Knocking on the Door of Your Heart. It is set to be released in June and is invited to premiere worldwide at the 24th Busan International Film Festival in October.
