Lee Byung-hun, Park Seo-joon, Park Bo-young confirmed to headline new disaster film ‘Concrete Utopia’

Upcoming disaster movie Concrete Utopia has announced its mind-blowing lineup of lead cast! According to Lotte Entertainment, the film will feature A-list actor Lee Byung-hun, as well as popular stars Park Seo-joon and Park Bo-young.

Concrete Utopia will revolve around people who survived a massive earthquake that has shaken Seoul to the ground. While Hwang Goong Apartment becomes the only concrete structure left standing in the city, its occupants soon face a dangerous predicament when outsiders begin invading the residential building.

Lee Byung-hun signed up to play Young-tak, a resident who leads the others towards safety as the situation inside their apartment complex starts to go out of control. Lee is best known for his portrayal of Storm Shadow in the Hollywood films G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) and its sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), as well as working closely with Bruce Willis in Red 2 (2013). The three-time Baeksang Arts Awards Best Actor for Film and 2011 Baeksang Arts Awards Grand Prize (Daesang) recipient is also gearing up for another catastrophe movie, Emergency Declaration (2020), where he will star alongside veteran actor Song Kang-ho.

Joining Lee Byung-hun is Park Seo-joon, who will take on the role of a salaryman named Min-sung. He is appointed by Young-tak to be his partner in protecting their neighbors from the sudden burst of infiltrators. The actor was propelled to international stardom by his notable small-screen appearances, but he has also acquired a lot of acting experience from his various involvements in films, the most recent ones being Midnight Runners (2017), Parasite (2019), and The Divine Fury (2019). In addition, Park Seo-joon is set to play the male lead in the upcoming inspirational movie Dream (2021), opposite singer-actress IU (Lee Ji-eun).

Meanwhile, Park Bo-young will transform into Min-sung’s warm-hearted wife, Myung-hwa. Having worked as a nurse, she takes care of those who got injured by the natural calamity and treats them kindly. Park Bo-young gained positive regard for her convincing performances in the movies Scandal Makers (2008), A Werewolf Boy (2012), You Call It Passion (2015), and On Your Wedding Day (2018).

The movie is an adaptation of the webcomic “Pleasant Neighbors” by manhwa (Korean term for comics) writer Kim Soong-nyoong. The digital comic serves as the second part of his first webtoon titled “Pleasant Bullying.” It earned wide recognition on Resin Comics since its serialization in January 2015 until its conclusion in February 2016.

Concrete Utopia will be director Uhm Tae-hwa’s first project in five years since the supernatural friendship movie Vanishing Time: A Boy Who Returned (2016). Shooting for the sci-fi film is slated to crank up in 2021.
