Dramas last week suffered a significant decrease in ratings amid the 3-day holiday in South Korea. These drops in ratings, however, do not necessarily imply that some viewers did not watch because they lost interest. The holiday is just a perfect time for other meaningful activities, and considering that there weren’t really many shows to choose from (only 5 out of the usual 12), one can’t help but take a break from watching. Happy Chuseok week everyone (albeit late)!

Korean Drama Rating Highlights

1. Chuseok disrupts ratings by up to 43 %. The Korean Thanksgiving Day (aka Chuseok) on October 4, one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea, caused a TEMPORARY disturbance in the status quo of television ratings last week. The problem is, the holiday is actually a 3-day one, from October 3 to 5, so it meant dramas that were airing on Tuesday through Thursday saw drastic changes in ratings. The worst one belongs to MBC’s Hospital Ship, which recorded 5.6 % on its first episode Wednesday night. That is lower than the previous week’s first Wednesday episode rating (9.8 %) by 42.9 % or 4.2 percentage point. Meanwhile, While You Were Sleeping suffered a decrease by up to 34 %, Temperature of Love by 24 %, and Lingerie Girls’ Generation by 21 %. Here’s the breakdown:

2. While You Were Sleeping dominates Wed-Thu slot. While You Were Sleeping and Hospital Ship battled it out last week and although the latter won Wednesday night, the former emerged as the winner the next day, beating the medical drama which consistently came in first in the competition for the last five weeks. While You Were Sleeping recorded 7.9 % and 8.9 % during the Thursday broadcast while Hospital Ship posted 7.1 % and 8.3 %.

3. Age of Youth 2 exits with 3.252 %. It’s a happy ending for JTBC’s sequel to last year’s Age of Youth as far as viewership ratings are concerned. The series achieved 3.040 % and 3.252 % for its last two episodes, figures that are lower than the previous week’s 3.657 % and 4.069 % but are still good enough for a cable show. It managed to obtain an average rating of 2.833 % which surpassed the first season’s 1.329 % by 1.5 percentage point.

4. Lingerie Girls’ Generation finishes run with 3.7 %. The throwback drama from KBS was consistently making above-4 % in ratings since its premiere until Chuseok hit on Tuesday. It recorded 4.4 % Monday night but the holiday somehow caused its ratings to drop to 3.7 %. The average rating equals 4.3 %.

Me? Just an ordinary lad with an extraordinary (says this something called ‘stereotype’) habit of watching Korean dramas. It started with action-filled City Hunter and the rest, as they say, is history.
