SBS’s upcoming romantic-fantasy fusion sageuk (historical drama) Hong Chun-gi has offered famous actress Kim Yoo-jung the titular role, hinting a possible team-up with actor Ahn Hyo-seop, who also received a proposal.
In response to media news about Kim’s confirmed appearance in the series, her agency Awesome ENT clarified on October 5, “Kim Yoo-jung has received a proposal to star in Hong Chun-gi and is considering it.”
Hong Chun-gi is set in the early 15th-century and will tell the story of the first and last female painter to ever enter the Dohwawon, otherwise known as Dohwaseo or the Korean Royal Academy of Painting. The drama aims to create an imaginative depiction of Hong Chun-gi’s artistic abilities as the only female artist that has been accounted in Joseon dynasty’s historical records. It is based on a novel of the same name by Jung Eun-gwol, the highly praised author of the source novels for Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) and The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012).
Kim Yoo-jung is in talks to play Hong Chun-gi, a rookie painter with positive energy and refreshing beauty. She initially decided to become an artist not because she possesses the best skills but because she needed to earn a living. During her stay within the palace walls, she comes across Grand Prince Anpyeong, the handsome arts enthusiast, and Haram, a man who lost his sight but is well-versed in reading the sky and constellations. Haram is reportedly the male lead character Ahn Hyo-seop has been tapped to portray.
Kim initially gained attention for playing young versions of female protagonists in television dramas such as Princess Hours (2006), Dong Yi (2010), and The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012). In 2016, she landed her first lead role in the historical series Love in the Moonlight, which brought her to international stardom and leveled up her caliber as an actress. She then went to headline the drama Clean with Passion for Now (2018–2019), where she was originally slated to star opposite Ahn Hyo-seop (Dr. Romantic 2), however, the actor had to withdraw due to scheduling issues. Most recently, Kim portrayed a more mature role in the romantic-comedy series Backstreet Rookie (2020).
Hong Chun-gi will be helmed by PD Jang Tae-yoo of My Love From the Star (2013–2014) and Hyena (2020).
