Kim Yoo-jung, Ahn Hyo-seop confirmed for historical-fantasy drama ‘Hong Chun-gi’

Actors Kim Yoo-jung and Ahn Hyo-seop will be collaborating on a new historical-fantasy drama!

On December 11, Ahn Hyo-seop’s agency Starhaus Entertainment said, “Ahn Hyo-seop has accepted the role of Ha Ram, the male protagonist of the drama Hong Chun-gi.” Later that same day, Kim Yoo-jung’s agency Awesome ENT also announced that the actress will play the main female character of the said drama.

SBS newest drama Hong Chun-gi is set in the Joseon period and follows the fateful love story of an exceptionally talented painter and a blind astrologer. Kim will be playing the titular role of Hong Chun-gi, a female painter who was chosen as the first female painter in Joseon history to enter Dohwawon or Dohwaseo, the Korean Royal Academy of Painting. Although born blind, she miraculously gained vision and pursued her passion in painting. Kim is expected to portray the life of Hong Chun-gi with a variation of detailed emotions. Meanwhile, Ahn is set to play opposite her as Ha Ram, a blind astrologer who can read the stars and constellations.

Kim Yoo-jung started in the acting industry as a child actress and has appeared in many series, with the most recent being Backstreet Rookie (2020). Meanwhile, singer and actor Ahn Hyo-seop made his acting debut five years ago and has since gained recognition for his roles in dramas such as Still 17 (2018), Abyss (2019), and most recently, the second season of Dr. Romantic (2020).

Hong Chun-gi is based on the novel of the same title by author Jung Eun-gwol, who also wrote the historical-novels-turned-hit-dramas Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) and The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), where Kim portrayed the young counterpart of the main female lead. Director Jang Tae-yoo, who contributed to the revival of the Hallyu (Korean wave) with masterpieces such as My Love from the Star (2013–2014) and Tree with Deep Roots (2011), will be spearheading the production in collaboration with writer Ha Eun, who will pen the script for the drama. This will serve as a reunion for actress Kim and PD Jang, who both worked in the 2008 historical series Painter of the Wind.

The drama is scheduled to air sometime in 2021.

Luna

It was Princess Lulu who first introduced her to Korean dramas but it was Yoon Ji-hoo from Boys Over Flowers who enticed her to stay in K-dramaland. She writes news and features for Kdramapal, which combines two of her most favorite things in the world—writing and K-dramas (look who's living the dream). The name Luna literally translates to "moon" and nothing special; she just likes writing at night.
