Kim Soo-hyun turns down Netflix thriller offer, joins Cha Seung-won in ‘Criminal Justice’ remake

After the success of his last drama It’s Okay To Not Be Okay in 2020, Kim Soo-hyun will grace the small screen once again, this time, alongside veteran actor Cha Seung-won.

On January 5, Kim’s agency Gold Medalist Entertainment announced that the actor will be appearing in the upcoming drama That Night (literal title), a Korean remake of the popular British series from BBC, Criminal Justice (2008). This came after the announcement last January 4 that the actor has turned down the lead role in Netflix’s upcoming original thriller series Finger, where he was offered to play a famous interior designer who is also a cold-blooded, sociopathic killer.

His new project, That Night, depicts two men who get involved in the murder of a woman. Kim Soo-hyun will play the role of Kim Hyun-soo, an ordinary college student who unexpectedly becomes a suspect in the murder case overnight because of a mistake.

The Hallyu (Korean wave) actor has starred in many hit series in the past, including Dream High (2011), The Moon Embracing the Sun (2012), and the global phenomenon My Love from the Star (2013–2014), which is said to have revived the decline of Hallyu in the country. He once again proved his acting versatility in his work with Seo Ye-ji, It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, which marked his official lead-role comeback after five years.

Meanwhile, Cha Seung-won has also confirmed to star in the remake. He will be portraying Shin Joong-han, a third-rate lawyer who will serve as Hyun-soo’s defender in the murder case. He barely passed the bar exam, but he willingly takes on Hyun-soo’s case. Cha is an actor who boasts of a wide spectrum of acting ability, covering all genres from romance to thriller, action, and comedy. He has been receiving love for his various works, such as the dramas City Hall (2009), The Greatest Love (2011), and Hwayugi (also known as A Korean Odyssey, 2017–2018). This will be his comeback project on the small screen after three years.

The production is a joint project of Chorokbaem Media, Studio M, and Gold Medalist Entertainment. It will be directed by The Fiery Priest (2019) and Backstreet Rookie (2020) PD Lee Myung-woo and penned by writer Kwon Soon-gyu of The Royal Gambler (2016) and Warrior Baek Dong-soo (2011).

Shooting for That Night will begin in the first half of 2021. It is scheduled to air in the latter half of the year. The network to broadcast the drama remake is still undecided and is an ongoing discussion.

Luna

It was Princess Lulu who first introduced her to Korean dramas but it was Yoon Ji-hoo from Boys Over Flowers who enticed her to stay in K-dramaland. She writes news and features for Kdramapal, which combines two of her most favorite things in the world—writing and K-dramas (look who's living the dream). The name Luna literally translates to "moon" and nothing special; she just likes writing at night.
