Kim So-hyun, Ji Soo starrer ‘River Where the Moon Rises’ teases with first poster

KBS2’s upcoming drama River Where the Moon Rises recently dropped its first poster to tease anticipating viewers.

The action-thriller sageuk (historical drama) is a reimagined narrative based on the popular urban legend about Goguryeo’s princess and a hunchbacked commoner. In the drama adaptation, the story will follow Princess Pyeonggang, who, despite her royal status, was raised like a soldier. She dreams of a great and peaceful Goguryeo and desires to rule over it someday as the first female Taewang (greatest king). However, her resolve is soon put to the test after she meets On Dal, a gentle and kind soul who is willing to do anything just to protect her.

The series takes pride in its notable cast. Kim So-hyun (The Tale of Nokdu) plays the bold and fearless princess from Goguryeo, while Ji Soo (When I Was the Most Beautiful) has been cast to star opposite her as the good-natured On Dal. Other cast members include Lee Ji-hoon (Dinner Mate), who plays the elite general Go Geon who yearns for Princess Pyeonggang’s affection, and Choi Yu-hwa (My Dangerous Wife), who portrays as Hae Mo-yong, a woman who has the ability to foresee the future and is in love with General Go Geon.

Baeksang’s 2020 Best Actor awardee Kang Ha-neul (When the Camellia Blooms) is also making a special appearance as On Dal’s father On Hyeop, a great warrior and the leader of the Sunnobu region in Goguryeo whose undying love and loyalty to the kingdom has earned him great respect from everyone around him.

River Where the Moon Rises teaser poster

The released poster shows the silhouette of Princess Pyeonggang on a horse, in the backdrop of the golden sky and with her head bent down. This image seems to indicate her hard and melancholic life as an aspiring monarch who is determined to lay down her life for Goguryeo. On Dal’s face can be seen as a reflection on the retreating clouds, symbolizing his great desire to watch over and protect the princess. In the middle of the poster is a caption that reads, “On Dal, the general who turned love into history. Princess Pyeonggang, whose life in Goguryeo was everything.”

Kim So-hyun and Ji Soo previously worked together in the 2016 KBS2 drama Page Turner. Meanwhile, Ji Soo and Kang Ha-neul were co-stars in the 2016 fantasy-romance sageuk Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, where they played brothers and royal princes of the Goryeo Kingdom.

An official from River Where the Moon Rises commented, “We wanted to symbolically express the tale of the characters Pyeonggang and On Dal through this teaser poster. We hope that the viewers will look forward to River Where the Moon Rises this coming February, which will take you to the Goguryeo era when Pyeonggang and On Dal passionately loved each other.”

River Where the Moon Rises, also known as The Moon Rising River, is directed by Yoon Sang-ho of Kingmaker: The Change of Destiny (2020) and penned by writer Han Ji-hoon of Woman of 9.9 Billion (2019–2020). The series is a production of Victory Contents. It is slated to air this February, replacing Royal Secret Agent (2020–2021) in its current time slot.

It was Princess Lulu who first introduced her to Korean dramas but it was Yoon Ji-hoo from Boys Over Flowers who enticed her to stay in K-dramaland. She writes news and features for Kdramapal, which combines two of her most favorite things in the world—writing and K-dramas (look who's living the dream). The name Luna literally translates to "moon" and nothing special; she just likes writing at night.
