Kim Myung-soo, Kwon Na-ra confirmed to headline new historical drama ‘Secret Royal Inspector’

K-pop idol slash actor Kim Myung-soo is confirmed to pair up with actress Kwon Na-ra in KBS2’s upcoming historical series Secret Royal Inspector.

Described as a multi-genre sageuk (historical drama), Secret Royal Inspector will follow the lives of the Joseon Dynasty’s royal investigators, an elite group of government officials personally scouted and appointed by the king. Dispatched secretly across the kingdom’s local provinces, they go undercover as ordinary citizens, bringing with them tasks to hear their fellowmen’s cries against corruption as well as track down government officials who have derailed and taken the path of graft and extortion.

Kim Myung-soo has been roped in to play the male protagonist Sung Yi-gyum, a civil servant working under the administrative and research department of Hongmungwan (Office of Special Advisors). Despite topping the state examination when he first entered into service, Yi-gyum has been living his life without direction. He spends most of his time frequenting courtesan houses and gambling. However, he got caught one day and was sentenced to fight corruption within the government as a secret royal inspector.

Also professionally known as INFINITE’s L, Kim Myung-soo is best known for his roles in the television series The Emperor: Owner of the Mask (2017), and Miss Hammurabi (2018). In 2019, his portrayal in KBS2’s romantic fantasy series Angel’s Last Mission: Love earned him the distinction as Best New Actor at the 12th Korea Drama Awards and KBS Drama Awards. Kim’s latest drama appearance was in Welcome (2020) where he played the character of a cat that can magically turn into a human being.

Gearing up as Kim’s leading lady is Kwon Na-ra, who will transform into Hong Da-in, a courtesan with a beauty that is parallel to that of Hwang Ji-ni’s (most famous courtesan in Korean history). With her undeniable experience in the craft, Da-in is the only one who has what it takes to entertain Joseon’s wealthiest men. Unbeknownst to them, she is a royal inspector who has disguised herself as a prostitute so she could witness and expose the delinquencies of public servants. When Da-in crosses paths with Yi-gyum, the two form a comical partnership filled with romantic tension, refreshing humor, and lots of case solving.

On to play her first role in a historical drama, Kwon previously received positive attention for her performances in the series My Mister (2018), Your Honor (2018), and Doctor Prisoner (2019). This year, she got hold of the spotlight and gained an international following for her captivating portrayal in the popular JTBC series Itaewon Class (2020).

On their next roles, Kim remarked, “I am happy and worried to play my role in Secret Royal Inspector. However, I am looking forward to conquering the challenge. I will do my best to show good acting.” Similarly, Kwon shared, “I fell in love with the character Hong Da-in, who juggles two identities: courtesan and secret inspector. Please look forward to it.”

Secret Royal Inspector will be helmed by by Kim Jung-min, director of Selection: The War Between Women (2019–2020), and will be co-penned by screenwriters Park Sung-hoon and Kang Min-sun.
