Kim Min-kyu confirms special appearance in ‘Backstreet Rookie’

Actor Kim Min-kyu is set to appear in the new SBS drama Backstreet Rookie, alongside lead stars Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung.

Backstreet Rookie, based on the webtoon “Convenience Store Saet-byul” by Hwalhwasan, tells the amusing love story of convenience store owner Choi Dae-hyun, played by Ji Chang-wook, and his part-timer Jung Saet-byul, played by Kim Yoo-jung.

Dae-hyun, after quitting his job at a large company, starts to run a 24-hour convenience store. In need of a part-timer to manage the store during night shifts, he hires Saet-byul, the then-high schooler he met years back. Only now, Saet-byul is a charming university student and a woman of strong will, morals, and sense of justice—a far cry from the troublemaker who had him buy cigarettes four years ago. With their age gap and quirky tandem, they form an unlikely relationship and set on daily adventures with the convenience store as backdrop.

Kim Min-kyu takes on the role of Ji-wook, Saet-byul’s former classmate from elementary school. He unexpectedly runs into her in the convenience store. He became an instant celebrity when he single-handedly stopped a robbery in a convenience store while working as a part-timer. His character is expected to bring drama and tension between Saet-byul and Dae-hyun.

Kim made his small-screen debut in the 2015 KBS2 drama Who Are You: School 2015. Since then, he has starred in over 10 dramas, including Signal (2016) and Perfume (2019). He last appeared in the TV Chosun historical series Selection: The War Between Women (also known as Queen: Love and War), where he played the lead role opposite actress Jin Se-yeon.

Backstreet Rookie is helmed by Lee Myung-woo of The Fiery Priest (2019) and penned by Son Geun-joo of My Secret Family (2015). It is set to premiere on June 12 at 10 p.m. KST as a Friday-Saturday drama, replacing The King: Eternal Monarch.
