Kang Ha-neul to play policeman in new rom-com potentially starring Gong Hyo-jin

Actor Kang Ha-neul has already selected his post-military TV project, a series which is called When The Camellia Blooms and has been courting Gong Hyo-jin for the female lead role.

A rom-com with hints of thriller and suspense elements, the said drama centers on a woman named Dong Baek as she is entangled in the lives of three men while she runs a bar named “Camellia” (which is also the meaning of her name). The male trio consists of a “good man,” a “bad man,” and a “cheap man.”

Gong Hyo-jin is in talks to star as Dong Baek while Kang Ha-neul has signed up for the role of Yong Shik, a neighborhood policeman who is in love with Dong Baek. His character is described as simple, naive, and honest. It is unclear yet whether or not Yong Shik is the principal male character but he is one of the three major male characters.

If Yong Shik turns out to be the male protagonist of the story, When The Camellia Blooms will become Kang Ha-neul’s first prime time drama in which he is the lead actor. Kang played supporting roles in several series including The Heirs, Misaeng, and Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo.

Kang Ha-neul will be discharged from his mandatory military service on May 23, 2019. He began his duty on September 11, 2017, and has been serving as a military police officer under the Republic of Korea Capital Defense Command.

While in the military, the actor actively participated in various military activities such as the musical “Shinheung Military Academy” in September 2018 which celebrated the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Korean armed forces in 1948, and a ceremony last April that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Korean Provisional Government.

When The Camellia Blooms is written by Im Sang-choon of Fight For My Way and will be directed by Cha Young-hoon of Are You Human Too?. It will be broadcast in the second half of the year.
