JTBC’s ‘Mystic Pop-up Bar’ starring Hwang Jung-eum, Yook Sung-jae to premiere worldwide on Netflix

Netflix has announced exciting news for international K-drama fans: JTBC’s upcoming comedy series Mystic Pop-up Bar will be holding a same-day worldwide premiere on the streaming platform this May 20.

Mystic Pop-Up Bar features lead actors Hwang Jung-eum of the rom-com series The Undateables (2018) and Yook Sung-jae of the fantasy romance drama Guardian: The Lonely and Great God (2016–2017). It is based on a webtoon of the same name and tells the story of the prickly pojangmacha (outdoor tent-bar) owner Wol-joo (Hwang) who crosses paths with the naïve, young part-timer Han Kang-bae (Yook). The two soon team up in helping their customers heal from unresolved sorrows by entering their dreams.

The 30-second trailer for the drama opens with Wol-joo hypnotically pouring someone a mysterious drink. Fast-paced scenes then follow showing Han Kang-bae’s gift of clairvoyance, later confirmed by Wool-joo’s accomplice Chief Gwi, who is played by actor Choi Won-young of Hyena (2020). Kang-bae’s apparent attraction to troubled customers leads him inside the dream of one. Upon discovering this, Wol-joo becomes ecstatic as she has finally found a “magnet” to aid her in helping 100,000 troubled souls. Likewise, Kang-bae believes that Wol-joo is his last hope in freeing himself from his unnatural abilities.

Mystic Pop-up Bar is the debut work of screenwriter Ha Yoon-ah and is helmed by PD Jeon Chang-geun of The Package (2017). It is set to air at 9:30 p.m. KST beginning May 20 as JTBC’s first-ever Wednesday-Thursday drama in eight years. Netflix will adopt the same schedule except that the series will be available for worldwide streaming a little later at 11 p.m. KST.
