OCN’s upcoming fantasy thriller The Uncanny Counter has dropped an action-packed trailer featuring lead actor Jo Byung-gyu.
Based on the Daum webtoon “Amazing Rumor” by Jang Yi, The Uncanny Counter follows demon hunters called “Counters” whose job is to hunt evil spirits that have crossed over to the earth in lure of immortal life. These demon hunters each possess unique supernatural powers and disguise themselves by posing as the employees of a noodle restaurant. The drama stars Jo Byung-gyu (Stove League), Gugudan’s Kim Se-jeong (I Wanna Hear Your Song), Yeom Hye-ran (Mystic Pop-Up Bar), and Yoo Jun-sang (Graceful Friends).
The 37-second video released on November 13 provides a sneak peek into Jo Byung-gyu’s character. Jo plays So Moon, a high-schooler who is also the youngest “Counter.” His ability is physical strength, and the teaser shows how he went from being a bullied kid in school to a charismatic man after discovering his superpowers. He starts out being physically weak and getting verbally abused at school. Despite this, he takes a stand for a friend who is also being bullied, betraying his righteous nature.
Jo then meets the “Counters” Kim Se-jeong, Yeom Hye-ran, and Yoo Jun-sang, who explain what they do and try to recruit him. Jo begins training hard, cultivating his power, and increasing his physical strength as well as determination. The clip ends with Jo kicking a man in the face as he walks towards the “Counters” saying “I’ll do it.”
The Uncanny Counter is helmed by director Yoo Seon-dong, who is known for the drama Vampire Prosecutor 2 (2012) and the horror film 0.0MHz (2019). It is set to premiere on November 28 on OCN, replacing Jang Dong-yoon and Jung Soo-jung’s Search. Simultaneously, it will also be available for streaming on Netflix.
