Ji Soo receives offer for lead role opposite Kim So-hyun in new drama ‘The Moon Rising River’

Upcoming historical series The Moon Rising River is working to materialize a Ji Soo and Kim So-hyun onscreen pairing!

Details about the potential team-up have surfaced after the actor shared with a Korean media outlet, “The Moon Rising River is one of the projects that I am reviewing for my next work.”

The Moon Rising River is a fusion sageuk (historical drama) that is set to reimagine South Korea’s widely known folktale about Goguryeo’s “Weeping Princess,” Princess Pyeonggang (Kim So-hyun, The Tale of Nokdu), who abandoned her royal life when she fell in love and married a hunchbacked commoner. Adding a twist to the traditional story is the representation of the princess as a selfish woman who takes advantage of her husband’s devotion to her so she could gain control over the entire kingdom.

Ji Soo is being pulled in to play the male protagonist Pabo Ondal or “Ondal the Fool” (“pabo” is the Korean word for “fool”). Although the specific nature of Ondal’s character in the upcoming series is yet to be revealed, urban legends describe him as an ugly yet good-hearted hunchbacked man whose kindness and brevity transformed him into a highly admired general. His unbelievable story has become an inspiring reference to countless Korean generations when they talk about an atypical man’s rise from destitution to distinction. In the upcoming drama, Ondal is reported to make a great sacrifice for love.

After making his small-screen debut with a cameo role in the popular series To the Beautiful You (2012), Ji Soo went on to portray notable characters in the series Page Turner (2016) and Fantastic (2016), but it was his main role in the popular drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016) that propelled him to international stardom. From then on, Ji Soo had been cast in several hit dramas like Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo (2016–2017), Strong Woman Do Bong-soon (2017), Bad Guys: Vile City (2017–2018), and the Netflix two-season original series My First First Love (2019). Currently, Ji Soo is impressing the viewers with his performance in the love-triangle-themed drama When I Was the Most Beautiful (ongoing).

If he decides to accept the proposal, Ji Soo will also be joining critically-acclaimed actor Kang Ha-neul (When the Camellia Blooms), who was originally tapped to portray Ondal but had to decline the role due to conflicting schedules. Instead, Kang signed up to appear as Ondal’s father, General Onhyup, who is said to play an integral part in the drama’s early episodes.

The Moon Rising River, previously known as Pyeonggang, Cut by the Heart, will be helmed by PD Yoon Sang-ho, director of King Maker: The Change of Destiny (2020), and penned by screenwriter Han Ji-hoon of Woman of 9.9 Billion (2019–2020). It targets to premiere in the first half of 2021.
