Ji Jin-hee, Kim Hyun-joo confirmed to reunite in Korean remake of BBC series ‘Undercover’

Identical Affairs (I Have a Lover) stars Ji Jin-hee and Kim Hyun-joo have signed up to reunite in JTBC’s adaptation of Undercover, a 2016 hit British mystery thriller series.

Undercover tells the story of a brilliant human rights lawyer who was nominated to become the first head of the Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit. On her path towards the high-ranking position, she soon discovers that her husband has been hiding behind a fake identity. The two then embark on an intense battle against massive forces that are controlling the country for profit, in an attempt to defend both love and justice.

Ji Jin-hee will suit up as Han Jung-hyun, an undercover agent working for the National Intelligence Service (NIS). His impressive skills and wit earned him a secretarial post at the Ministry of Police when he was still studying at the National Police University. During a top-secret mission, he fell in love with a woman and decides to marry her, abandoning his life as an intelligence operative to start a new one with his wife.

Ji is best known for his portrayals in sageuk (historical) dramas A Jewel in the Palace (2003) and Dong Yi (2010). His recent projects include Second to Last Love (2016), Misty (2018), and Designated Survivor: 60 Days (2019). For his current role, the actor shared, “I decided to accept the offer because I am touched by Han Jung-hyun’s willingness to sacrifice himself for his loved ones. I am looking forward to come back with a good drama and acting, so I am asking for your continued interest in Undercover.”

Taking on the role of Jung-hyun’s wife, Choi Yeon-soo, is actress Kim Hyun-joo. Yeon-soo is a civil-rights lawyer who always seeks fairness and truth. When she was proposed to lead as the chief of the Civil Servant Corruption Investigations Unit, her husband’s history in the world of espionage resurfaces, and they get caught up in a vortex of uncontrollable situations.

Kim has left a lasting impression for her performances in popular series, including Marrying a Millionaire (2005–2006) and Identical Affairs (2015–2016), with the latter being her second pair-up with Ji Jin-hee four years ago. They first teamed up in the 2004 rom-com series Ms. Kim’s Million Dollar Quest. She went on to star in The Miracle We Met (2018) and WATCHER (2019). In playing the female protagonist Yeon-soo, Kim remarked, “As soon as I read the script, I instantly became interested in the entangled relationship of the characters, so much that I finished it in one go. I wanted to greet the viewers again with great projects, and Choi Yeon-soo came at the right time for me, an ideal character to do just that. I would appreciate everyone’s anticipation and support.”

Undercover will be helmed by Song Hyun-wook, director of Graceful Friends (2020), and will employ the collaborative skills of screenwriters Baek Cheol-hyun, Song Ja-hoon, and Jung Hye-eun. It is set to premiere in the first half of 2021.
