Ji Chang-wook, Kim Yoo-jung, other cast members attend first script reading for ‘Backstreet Rookie’

Upcoming SBS rom-com drama Backstreet Rookie on May 8 shared candid stills from its first table read, presenting lead stars Ji Chang-wook and Kim Yoo-jung.

Backstreet Rookie is based on the popular webtoon “Convenience Store Saet-byul” and tells the love story of convenience store owner Choi Dae-hyun (Ji Chang-wook) and his quirky part-time employee Jung Saet-byul (Kim Yoo-jung) who are 13 years apart.

According to those present, Ji Chang-wook brought laughter to the room as he portrayed how his clumsy character tries to be aloof from Saet-byul despite actually growing fond of her.

Meanwhile, Kim Yoo-jung also showcased a deep immersion to her role as a wild and unpredictable university student. She personified the free-spirited but charming character of Saet-byul and delighted the audience at the script reading with her talent.

Other cast members present at the scene include Solbin of LABOUM as Kim Yoo-jung’s sister and former Secret member Han Sun-hwa who plays the role of Choi Dae-hyun’s girlfriend. In addition, veteran actors Lee Byung-joon and Woo Hyun served some seasoned acting skills as Dae-hyun’s father and as a neighborhood restaurant owner, respectively.

At the end of the script reading, director Lee Myung Woo (The Fiery Priest) said that he is excited to see the various characters come to life through the team of power actors and that he believes the series will bring positive vibes across its viewers.

Likewise, the producers have guaranteed to depict a relatable human drama set in an ordinary convenience store backdrop but one that will deliver feel-good emotions and brilliant humor.

Backstreet Rookie is produced by Taewon Entertainment and marks the comeback of screenwriter Son Geun-joo (My Sweet Family). It is set to air every Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. KST beginning June 12, replacing The King: Eternal Monarch.
