Just weeks before its anticipated premiere, KakaoTV has started to get busy releasing promo stills for its upcoming web series City Couple’s Way of Love. On November 18, the series dropped its main poster featuring the two main stars Ji Chang-wook and Kim Ji-won.
The romantic-comedy drama aims to highlight young people’s journey in finding true love and happiness amidst the chaos of their city life. It features Ji Chang-wook as the passionate and honest architect Park Jae-won and Kim Ji-won as the freelance marketer Lee Eun-oh. The short but light series is expected to bring a different kind of fun with its colorful urban theme. Produced on a seasonal basis, the series will open with its first story titled My Lovely Camera Thief that centers on the city life of the young generations who are in constant search of “another me.”
Aside from being an architect, Jae-won is an honest and hopeless romantic person who knows how to love passionately. He is still unable to get over Eun-oh, a woman he calls the “camera thief” who took away his heart a year ago but disappeared like a midsummer night’s dream. Eun-oh, on the other hand, is a straightforward freelancer who says what she wants to say. However, she met and fell in love with Jae-won while under the fake identity of Yoon Sun-ah, a free-spirited and cheerful woman who is completely different from her real self.
The released main poster is set against the backdrop of a city filled with lights in a retreating sunset, setting a calm but mesmerizing scene. The two central characters, Jae-won and Eun-oh, sit side by side under the city night where the fireworks light up the sky. Eun-oh can be seen deeply in awe with the burst of lights, looking at it with such giddy eyes and an excited smile. Meanwhile, instead of the fireworks, Jae-won’s gaze is intently focused on the face of the person beside him. He is looking at Eun-oh with a small but warm smile and lovestruck eyes. Although there is some space between the two, there is a little romantic tension that can be felt from them. Their hands are safely placed on their laps but it is as if they are longing to touch each other but choose not to.
Ji Chang-wook and Kim Ji-won both take on different transformations through their passionate characters in pursuit of love. The two aim to create a type of romance that a lot of people can relate to, particularly the generation where love takes on a different concept that is hard to get by in a city full of busy people. Anticipations are therefore set on how Ji Chang-wook and Kim Ji-won will pull off their onscreen chemistry, considering that both are established names in the industry for their solid and stable acting skills.
Ji Chang-wook’s breakthrough in his career came after he played the role of Emperor Ta Hwan in MBC’s historical drama Empress Ki (2013–2014) with sensational actress Ha Ji-won. Afterwards, he received lead roles in series such as KBS2’s Healer (2014–2015), tvN’s The K2 (2016) and Melting Me Softly (2019), and SBS’s Suspicious Partner (2017) and Backstreet Rookie (2020), with the latter being his most recent project. Meanwhile, Kim Ji-won took on supporting roles in many popular series in the past, such as SBS’s To the Beautiful You (2012) and The Heirs (2013), but it was not until her role in the phenomenal medical romance drama Descendants of the Sun (2016) that Kim became a household name, leading to her first-ever lead role in KBS2’s Fight for My Way (2017). She last starred in tvN’s historical-fantasy series Arthdal Chronicles (2019) with Descendants of the Sun co-star Song Joong-ki.
Aside from the two main stars, the whole production ensemble also excites the expecting fans and viewers. Director Park Shin-woo, who has been recognized for his work in the sensational yet controversial healing romance drama It’s Okay To Not Be Okay (2020), as well as other popular dramas such as Hyde, Jekyll, Me (2015) and Jealousy Incarnate (2016), is the one headlining the series in collaboration with screenwriters Jung Hyun-jung from Romance Is a Bonus Book (2019) and Jung Da-yeon.
City Couple’s Way of Love will have a total of only 12 episodes, with each episode running for 30 minutes. The first episode will be released on KakaoTV on December 8 at 5 p.m. KST.
