Im Soo-hyang is in talks to headline the Korean adaptation of the hit American rom-com series Jane the Virgin!
According to Im’s agency FN Entertainment, “Im Soo-hyang has been offered to appear in the drama Jane the Virgin and is positively considering [the offer].”
Jane the Virgin itself is a loose adaptation of the 2002 Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen. The US version, which ran for five seasons from 2014 to 2019, featured Gina Rodriguez as the titular character Jane Villanueva.
Jane is a hard-working young woman who has vowed to save her virginity until marriage. However, her life gets turned upside down when she becomes pregnant after her gynecologist, by accident, artificially inseminates her during a regular check-up.
Im Soo-hyang has reportedly been offered the role of Lee Soo-jung, the main character of the Korean Jane the Virgin. Soo-jung is a senior at Korea University’s Korean language education department. She has sworn to keep her chastity before marriage after her mother, who accidentally got pregnant with her at the age of 18, left her under her grandmother’s care.
If Im confirms her participation in the series, it will mark her small-screen comeback following her last drama, MBC’s When I Was the Most Beautiful, which aired in 2020. The actress is also known for her roles in the dramas ID: Gangnam Beauty (2018) and Graceful Family (2019).
The Korean remake of Jane the Virgin will be produced by Group 8 and penned by Jang Ah-mi. As of writing, the broadcast schedule and network are reportedly still under discussion.
