Gong Yoo is reviewing an offer to headline a new Korean Netflix original series titled The Sea of Silence, his agency Management Soop announced on April 21.
The Sea of Silence is a sci-fi thriller that is set in a dystopian future where people suffer from food and water shortages as a result of desertification. Should he accept the offer, Gong Yoo will be taking on the role of Yoon-jae, a charismatic soldier and exceptional member of the Space and Aeronautics Administration. He is tasked with leading a team that sets out on a space mission to retrieve unknown samples from an abandoned research facility on the moon.
Gong Yoo was last seen playing a TV lead role in the critically-acclaimed fantasy romance drama Goblin (2016-2017), which also featured actors Kim Go-eun, Lee Dong-wook, Yoo In-na, and Yook Sung-jae.
Meanwhile, Bae Doo-na is also in talks to star in The Sea of Silence, her agency SBD Entertainment said on April 13. If she accepts the role, this will be her fourth project under Netflix, following Sense 8 (2015-2018), Kingdom (2019-2020, two seasons), and Persona (2019).
The Sea of Silence is an eight-part project based on a short film of the same name by director Choi Hang-yong, who will also direct the series adaptation. Screenwriter Park Eun-kyo of the award-winning 2009 film Mother will pen the script.
The Sea of Silence will begin filming in August.
