Girl’s Day’s Hyeri, Jang Ki-yong confirmed to star in new webtoon-based drama ‘Frightening Cohabitation’

tvN has confirmed its drama adaptation of Naver Webtoon’s popular comic “Frightening Cohabitation,” along with its casting announcement of lead stars Lee Hye-ri and Jang Ki-yong.

Frightening Cohabitation tells the story of a female college student who accidentally swallows the magical orb of a human-guised male gumiho (mythical nine-tailed fox). Crazy yet comical events inevitably arise as the two of them are forced to live together until they figure out a solution.

Lee Hye-ri has signed up to portray the female protagonist Lee Dam, a free-spirited and cheerful 24-year-old university student. She ironically serves as her friends’ relationship guru despite the fact that she has never had a deep connection with a guy. Her life takes an interesting turn, however, when an accident forces her to live with a male gumiho. Having left a lasting impression for her performances in Reply 1988 (2015–2016) and Miss Lee (2019), the K-pop-idol-turned-actress is expected to render yet another unforgettable portrayal in the upcoming romantic fantasy series.

Meanwhile, Jang Ki-yong is set to transform into Shin Woo-yeo, a strict yet charming 999-year-old gumiho. In order to attain human form, Woo-yeo has been gathering human spirits and sealing them inside a magical bead. But his almost century-worth of efforts are all bound to go down the drain if he fails to get the bead out of Lee Dam’s body within just one year. Jang rose to stardom for his support role in the television series Go Back Couple (2017). He then widened his acting repertoire by headlining the dramas Kill It (2019), Search: WWW (2019), and most recently, Born Again (2020).

Meanwhile, actor Kim Do-wan (She Knows Everything) already confirmed his participation in Frightening Cohabitation earlier, while his Start-Up co-star Kang Han-na (Designated Survivor: 60 Days) is also in talks to appear.

The production team behind the new drama shared, “We are happy to be the ones behind the highly requested drama adaptation of the webtoon “Frightening Cohabitation.” They added, “Jang Ki-yong and Lee Hye-ri have been cast in lead roles. [And] based on their outstanding performances in previous dramas, excitement for their onscreen synergy in the upcoming series is also building up on our end. Please continue your interest in Frightening Cohabitation.”

Frightening Cohabitation will be helmed by Nam Sung-woo of Kkondae Intern (2020) and will be co-penned by screenwriters Baek Sun-woo and Choi Bo-rim, who previously worked together in writing the script for the seasonal drama Ugly Young-A (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015) and A Poem a Day (2018). It is slated to be the first Korean original production by the global streaming platform iQIYI and will be aired on tvN in 2021.
