First look at Ji Chang-wook, Kim Yoo-jung in new rom-com series ‘Backstreet Rookie’

Upcoming SBS drama Backstreet Rookie has dropped its first teaser!

Based on the popular webtoon “Convenience Store Saet-byul,” Backstreet Rookie tells the comical love story of the 24-hr convenience store owner Choi Dae-hyun (Ji Chang-wook) and his quirky but charming part-time employee Jung Saet-byul (Kim Yoo-jung).

The short teaser opens with clips of Choi Dae-hyun dozing off while supposedly tending to his store. He jolts up at the sound of the door chimes and sees Jung Saet-byul confidently walking towards him. He later asks her “We’re a team?” which Saet-byul, who is now wearing the staff uniform, affirms with a cute smile.

The next segments reveal a suspicious Dae-hyun saying, “So she’s just going to scrounge off from my convenience store?” while Saet-byul is taking charge of the cash register and is tossing around money for fun. The video cuts to Saet-byul asking Dae-hyun, “Are you doubting me?” as he is shown spying on her from behind the shelves.

The ending scenes feature Saet-byul’s near-miss high kick to Dae-hyun’s face and the two characters throwing funny gestures at each other. Another cast member, Eum Moon-suk, then appears in a bubble window and whispers “The wait is almost over Just hang in there for a little bit more.”

In their recent script reading, the cast and crew of the series have previously promised to produce a relatable human drama that will refresh the anticipating viewers with feel-good emotions and brilliant humor.

Backstreet Rookie is directed by Lee Myung-woo (The Fiery Priest) and marks the comeback of screenwriter Son Geun-joo (My Sweet Family). It is set to air every Friday and Saturday at 10 p.m. KST beginning June 12, replacing The King: Eternal Monarch.
